How to use 'hope and 'wish'

'Hope' and 'wish' are verbs.The word 'hope' depicts something that will possibly happen.

For example: I hope that you will attend my party. It can be used in any tense.

Wish: It is used to indicate something that never happened or definitely will not happen. The word 'wish' should not be followed by any present tense verb or present tense auxiliary.

For Example: I wish that you stop arguing. It means you won't stop.


I wish that I had got the job.This means 'I did not get the job'.


Sample Usage

I hope that it will not rain today.
I was held up in the meeting. I hoped that I could attend your party.
We have invited the Chairman to be the Chief Guest. We hope that he will come.
I wish that I had enough time to play chess. This means that I don't have enough time.
