Gerunds or-ing nouns.

Gerunds or -ing nouns :Swimming, Reading, Smoking are called gerunds when they are used as a noun in a sentence. For example:Smoking is injurious to
health.In this sentence the word smoking is acting as a noun because it is the subject of the sentence .

It can also become the object of a verb. Let us consider this example: I hate smoking . Here, smoking is the object of a verb.

It can also be the object of a preposition or a prepositional phrase: I am fond of swimming. Here, the word swimming act as the object of prepositional phrase 'fond of' . I developed my knowledge in English by reading various English novels.Here, by is a preposition which is followed by the gerund'reading'


Sample Usage

Reading is a good habit.
Rani enjoys cooking continental food.
Raj is interested in making new friends.
