At some time or other you may have had the frustrating experience of having your ATM card getting swallowed up by the machine and not being able to retrieve it. At such times, the first thing to do is to report it to your Bank. You need to do this pronto as now-a-days ATM cards are not just pure ATM cards but are ATM-cum-debit cards. Hence if by some chance your card pops out of the machine when the next user of the ATM machine arrives, it could be misused. Don't forget: there are hackers who know how to get hold of bank account numbers & passwords!

It is best to give a letter in writing to your Bank, but it is also a good idea to send an email in this regard. Make sure you mention the ATM card number, the location of the ATM machine, and the time of the incident.

If the Bank branch where you have an account does not respond, you should contact the Sr. Manager/Head of Customer Services of the main office in your city (see sample usage below).

If this, too, does not help, then directly contact the Bank's head office in India.

Sir,
Yesterday evening at 6p.m. I visited the ATM machine of your bank's Dadar branch. The ATM is located outside Dadar railway station, Mumbai, near Balaji Stores. To my horror, when I put in my ATM card [here you should quote the card number] into the ATM machine it was immediately swallowed up by the machine. I immediately informed the security guard on duty, who said to inform the Bank Manager of the branch. However, although the Bank Manager noted down my complaint, he said I should contact the branch of the bank where I have an account in Mumbai to get a new ATM card issued & that it was not possible to retrieve/return the card stuck in the machine.

Accordingly, I applied for a new ATM card through my own branch, namely Santacruz Branch Mumbai. It is now one month since I made this application. As yet, I have not received my new ATM-cum-debit-card.

As I am a frequent traveler, I need the ATM card urgently. I did not expect such a long delay, from a prestigious bank like yours, in processing my application for a new ATM card.

It is hoped that you will look into my complaint and get a new ATM card issued to me immediately.

Regards,
Prakash Solanki
