Rule of proximity

Sometimes the parts of a sentence that are most closely related in thought are not properly placed.

1. Always remember that a relative pronoun should be placed next to its antecedent.


2. Qualifying phrases or clauses should be placed as near as possible to the word they qualify.



3. An adjective and its qualifying phrase should come together.



Sample Usage

Eg1. He left the confidential reports on his table which he should have handed over to the D.A.G. (incorrect)

He left on the table the confidential reports which he should have handed over to the D.A.G. (correct)

Eg2. Mr. M was sent to the deputation to the Punjab Roadways, the most intelligent superintendent in the office. (Incorrect)

Mr. M, the most intelligent superintendent in the office, was sent on deputation the Punjab Roadways. (Correct)

Eg3. I have never seen a quicker man at accounting than Mr. B. (incorrect)

I have never seen a man quicker at accounting than Mr. B. (correct)
