Proper Usage

The topic of our discussion today is ‘Homophones'. The word ‘Homophone is made of two syllables. ‘Homo' means ‘same' and ‘phone' means ‘sound' . Therefore, the words that produce almost same sound are called 'Homophones'. However, although the pronunciation and spelling are almost the same, the meanings are often poles apart.
Thus, we can define 'Homophones' as a set of words having almost same pronunciation and a slightly different spelling but quite different in meanings. The set of words can comprise two or even more words.
Since the words are almost alike in spelling and pronunciation, there is every possibility of using one word in stead of the other. Therefore, the best way of mastering over ‘Homophones' is to learn them by heart and use them as frequently as possible.

along with their spellings, proper meanings and usage:

1. Accept— To take— I accept the whole responsibility of this job.
Except— Excluding — Except me, nobody supported him.
Expect— Hope— I expect a favourable response from him.
2. Access – Approach— I have no access to the manger of the bank.
Excess—More than desired— Excess of everything is bad.
3. Accede— Accept — She acceded to my request.
Exceed— Surpass — Your answer should not exceed 250 words.
4. Amicable— Friendly — Everything was settled amicably.
Amiable— Lovable — She has an amiable nature.
5. Affect— To influence — Prolonged illness affected his studies.
Effect— Result — My sincere request had no effect on her.
6. Site — Place — The police reached the site of the accident.
Cite— To quote — He cites many incidents relating to the issue.
Sight — Vision — The sight of the accident area was horrible.
7. Adapt— Take up — I have adapted to my new job.
Adept— Expert — Meena is adept in painting.
8. Caste— Social class — Mahatma Gandhi didn't believe in caste.
Cast— Throw — The fisherman cast his net into the pond.
Cost— Price — The cost of this shirt is not much.
9. Childlike—Innocent — We like him for his childlike nature.
Childish— Silly — We didn't expect such childish behaviour you.
10.Creditable— Praiseworthy — It is creditable for you to top the list.
Credible— Believable — The story she told is not at all credible.
