Proper Use of among/between

among/between
Among is used to indicate relationships involving more than two people or things, while between is used to show relationships involving two people or things, or to compare one thing to a group to which it belongs: The three quarreled among themselves because she had to choose between two of them. Between is also used to express relationships of persons or things considered individually, no matter how many: Between holding public office, teaching, and raising a family, she has little free time.

“use among with objects denoting three or more (a group), and use between with those denoting only two (or twos)"

among refers to a relationship involving three or more, whereas between refers to a relationship of two.



Sample Usage

"Responsibility is shared among the faculty."

Walk to the picnic area between the swimming beach, the boathouse and the playground.

"There is significant disagreement on this issue between Germany, France and Austria."

"We shared the candy amongst the children."

"She chose between Harvard, Brown, and Yale"
