Word order is a common testing point. Whenever you see a numerical question, sigh with relief. They are very easy once you understand the forms. There are two different types of numerical modifiers with two different styles each.

Sample Usage

1. order
chapter one (cardinal) ------correct
the first chapter (ordinal) -------correct

the chapter one ------ incorrect
first chapter ------- incorrect

lane one (cardinal) ------- correct
the first lane (ordinal) ------ correct

lane the first -------- incorrect
the one lane -------- incorrect

Notice that in the second example in both the sets we must have an article.

For simple nouns we are using cardinal numbers...one, two, three, four, etc...or we can use ordinal numbers...first, second, third, fourth, etc... depending on the order of the expression.

2. dates
March first, The first of March
April tenth, The tenth of April

When we refer to dates, we must always use ordinal numbers, irrespective of the order
