This is used in the context to caution people when something is done vaguely.This idiom is also applied when things need to be done meticulously to avoid any further problems in the future.

When something is done very carefully to prevent the occurrences of future problems, this idiom is used.


Sample Usage

1)I applied for the membership of a library when the authorities asked me to know the ropes and apply.

2)Sam was made to know the ropes by his father, when he was applying for scholarship.

3)Any university before giving admission wants to know the ropes of the applicant to avoid future problems.

4)A visa counselor will carefully know the ropes of the applicant before issuing a visa to the person applied.
