Cliche means a trite, overused phrase or idea.

Cliche comes under noun.

Synonyms: banality, hackneyed expression, old story, old saw, platitude, sterotype.

Antonyms: new idea, original phrase.


Sample Usage


The essay was not only long, it was also filled with cliches.

"The dawning of a new day" is a cliche; the phrase has lost its impact through overuse.

The critics complained that the otherwise imaginative play ended with a cliche.

Advertisers would be wise to avoid using cliches that tend to put their audience to sleep.
