Amnesty

Amnesty means a general pardon for offenses.

Amnesty is a noun.

Synonyms: immunity, forgiveness, absolution, reconciliation, reprieve.

Antonyms: penalty, punishment, redress, condemnation, retaliation.

Note: Amnesty always refers to a pardon given to a class or group of people. When a single person is pardoned it is simply called a pardon.


Sample Usage

Instead of giving a pardon to one of the rebels, the president granted amnesty to the entire group.

The government granted amnesty to all the students who fought for formation of separate Telangana state.

The government declared a tax amnesty; anyone with huge debt would receive a pardon as long as they had paid their previous taxes.
