Libel means a published or written falsehood that injuries or defames the reputation of someone.

Libel is a noun.

Synonyms: slander, slur, aspersion, defamation, calumny, printed.

Antonyms: apology, vindication.

Note: Slander is similar to libel except that slander is spoken, not written.


Sample Usage

The political leader used slander in his speeches to try to undermine his competition. When he printed the same false statements in his pamphlets, he was guilty of libel.

The libel rules are designed to help and protect the innocent people from false and defaming accusations.

Our newspaper has never been accused of libel; we are always careful to validate any news we print.
