The Tenses—Continuous Tense--Part IV

Hi friends,

We have already discussed in detail about the Present Indefinite Tense. Now let us have a look at the formation of the Present Continuous Tense

The word ‘continuous' means interrupted. It indicates that some action is/was/will be going on at the time of speaking or writing.

Present Continuous Tense

The Present Continuous Tense is used to show that some action is going on.

1. To show an action taking place at the time of speaking or writing:

You are reading a novel.
The cat is chasing the rat.

Present Continuous Tense is also used:

2. To express an action that might not be actually happening at the time of speaking or writing:

You are wasting your time.
They are preparing for the examination.

3. To express an action that will take place in the near future:

We are leaving for Agra tomorrow.
My uncle is coming in the evening.

Formation of Sentences

Affirmative Sentence

Pattern: Subject + is/am/are + first form of the verb + ing + object.

Examples:

1. I am going to school. 2. We are going to school.
3. You are going to school. 4. He is going to school.
5. She is going to school 6. They are going to school.
7. Razia is going to school. 8. Aman is going to school.
9. The children are going to school. 10. The boys are going to school.

Remember:

1. For pronoun I, ‘am' is used after the subject.
2. For pronouns, we, you, they and any other plural, ‘are' is used after the subject.
2. For pronouns he, she, it and any other name, ‘is' is used after the subject.
3. ‘ing' is added to the first form of verb.
4. A Full Stop (.) is used at the end of the sentence.

Negative Sentence

Pattern: Subject + is/am/are + not + first form of the verb + ing + object.

Examples:

1. I am not going to school. 2. We are not going to school.
3. You are not going to school. 4. He is not going to school.
5. She is not going to school 6. They are not going to school.
7. Razia is not going to school.8. Aman is not going to school.
9. The children are not going 10. The boys are not going to school.
to school.

Remember:

5.Is she going to school? 6. Are they going to school?
7.Is Razia going to school? 8. Is Aman going to school?
9.Are the children going 10.Are the boys going to school?
to school?

Remember:
