All that glitters is not gold is a proverb which means that looks and appearances can be misleading at times. Anything that appears to be attractive, alluring or glitzy may actually turn out to be quite worthless.

Many times cleverly crafted glitzy advertisements allure you towards a product which is not even half as good in reality. It is then that one realizes that all that glitters is not gold! The Saying is a way of warning you that too much importance should not be attached to physical appearances.

Sample Usage

1. When I went to watch a cricket match in the stadium, it did not turn out to be as exciting as it appears on television which made me realize that all that glitters is not gold.

2. My friend was on the lookout for a new car and I told her, “Be careful in your decision because all that glitters is not gold".

3. The controversies associated with Bt Brinjal clearly indicate that all that glitters is not gold.
