Once Bitten, Twice Shy

Once bitten, twice shy is a Proverb which means that if someone has been hurt once, he tends to be extra careful and alert the next time.

The word shy here can be interpreted as being cautious.

It basically means that one bitter experience teaches you to be more careful in future.

A person tries to avoid situations, circumstances and people who have been responsible for his unpleasant experience before.


Sample Usage

1. The last time Kavita ate mushrooms, she almost choked and has stopped eating mushrooms altogether since then. I guess it is a case of once bitten, twice shy.

2. My friend decided to steer clear of chemical conditioners for his hair after he developed a severe allergy. Once bitten, twice shy, I suppose.

3. The old saying “Once bitten, twice shy' does not seem to have any affect on Rahul Mahajan who is on a nation wide hunt for a bride in spite of having gone through a divorce recently.
