Difference between 'Informant' and 'Informer'

The informant is the man who supplies some information.

An informer is a spy.

The informant is used in a good sense,but the informer has bad associations.

Sample Usage

My informant in this matter is my friend Srivastava.

People have come to know that he is a wretched informer.
