Difference between 'Proportional' and 'Proportionate'

Proportional
Proportional means 'in due proportion'.

Proportionate
Proportionate means 'corresponding in degree or amount'.


Sample Usage

Proportional
1. The Hindus in the Punjab wanted proportional representation.
2. The punishment ought to be proportional to the crime.

Proportionate
1. The punishment has been proportionate to the offence.
2. Are his wages really proportionate to the amount of work he does ?
