It was 29 August 1882, the second test between England and Australia was being played at the Oval. The first one between these two teams was also played at the Oval in the year 1880 where England emerged victors. In this particular test, the English side were set a target 85 for a win and they began in the right earnest with only 34 more required with 7 wickets in hand. But then started the one of the most famous collapse in test history with Fred Spofforth claiming 7 wickets. Australia won the test by 7 runs stunning the English spectators.
The British press, the next day, criticized the English cricket side and posted a mock obituary lamenting on the demise of English cricket. An Ashes urn was presented to the English captain Hon Ivo Bligh after winning the return series in Australia 2-1. It was reported that he brought back the Ashes to England. The urn was filled with ashes said to be from burning a cricket bail, a stump and the cover of a ball. Some reports even say that the urn contained the ashes of a burnt ladies veil. The Ashes legend revived and till date the bilateral series between England and Australia are termed the Ashes.
