  • Which is better - tooth filling or tooth veneering

Unsure whether to go for tooth filling or for tooth veneering? Get the best advice from the responses below to know which of these is the better option.

I recently visited a dentist and asked her for filling the gap which got created due to very small part of a tooth getting broken. The gap was looking like a triangle since two frontal tooth had got broken. The Dentist suggested me two of the options for filling this gap: one is simple filling with the best available filling material and other a process named veneering which actually creates a cover to the tooth and is usually used by celebrities for beautiful smiles.

I was told that in the case of tooth filling, there is a chance that the filled material may come out, while in veneering, it's a permanent solution.

Furthermore, for filling it would cost me around 3000 for both teeth, while it would be 7000 INR for veneering.

Suggest me the better option I should go for.

  • Hi,
For broken part of teeth, you can choose any option.
Tooth Filling is easy and cheaper, so you may choose according to your financial priority. In filling, different materials can be used like Amalgam fillings, Composite fillings, silver filling etc. Amalgam fillings are stronger than composite fillings and even they last longer than composite fillings. Composite fillings are expensive because they are less noticeable than Silver amalgam filling. Composite fillings may leak out Bisphenol-A- a toxic material, so this should be discussed with dentist before opting for this option.
Amalgam fillings require the dentist to remove healthy tooth structure because Amalgam does not create bond with tooth. So, dentist creates wider gap for filling. In case of Composite filling, it gets shrink after some time and this may lead to create gaps with tooth. These gaps may allow the bacterial growth.
Veneer is a cosmetic filling mostly used by actors. It is basically a thin layer of metal covering the tooth either to give aesthetic look or to protect from external damage.

So, you may select according to your choice and discuss the positive and negative aspects with dentist accordingly.

  • Dear Questioner, you have replied your own question as veneering will be a better and long lasting solution. One more option is available to you for solving your problem and adding beauty to your smile. You can go in for root canal treatment to make bridge for porcelain caps but remember asking the dentist to use the finest stain proof materials. Discuss with dentist and he or she may agree with the opinion. Moreover teeth getting broken as in your case indicates that you have Calcium and Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D, generally known as Sunshine Vitamin can be had from sunshine on sunny days in winter or you can have CCM tablets by Glaxosmithkline to cope with both the deficiencies.

  • Filling a tooth is a remedy used for filling cavities formed in our teeth. Generally there are two types of fillings, metal and tooth coloured. But if you bump or knock your mouth or bite your tongue while talking or eating, the fillings can come out.

In case of veneering, it is the process where the broken or uneven teeth are repaired. In the process a thin layer of tooth colored material is fit over your existing tooth.

In the process some enamel from the outer layer of the tooth is removed and the veneer is made and fit on the tooth or teeth. With the proper care, veneer can remain for many years.

Veneer can get damaged like original teeth but it is possible to repair it easily. Thus it is always better to select the option of veneering as a long term solution.

A tooth filling (composite bonding) is usually the more conservative and cost-effective option for small chips or gaps. It preserves more of your natural tooth and can be repaired or replaced easily if needed.

Veneers are more long-term and aesthetic-focused, but they require more tooth preparation and are generally recommended when you want a complete smile makeover or stronger cosmetic correction.

For a small broken edge or minor gap, many dentists prefer starting with a filling first. You can always consider veneers later if you want a more permanent cosmetic upgrade.

At Fixed Price Dental, the approach is usually to choose the least invasive option first while still achieving a natural, long-lasting result based on the patient's needs.
