  • In my opinion, to begin with serious research should be carried out on internet to know more and more about civil services examination. The website of the Union Public Service Commission provides full information about CS (Preliminary) as well as CS (Main) examinations. Useful information about the scheme, list of optional subjects, list of optional subjects (literature) and relevant statistical data etc. is made available on the said website besides overview of the examination.

  • My advice is as under:-

    (a) Start preparation for General Studies (both Preliminary and Main). Rea newspapers, periodicals including some so-called 'boring' periodicals like 'Yojana'. Learn about various Government schemes. Keep Manorama Year Book and the book published by the Publication Division of Government of India.
    (b) Decide which optionals would you take for Prelim. and for Main. Study the syllabi and question papers. Try to understand the pattern.
    (c) Contact a reliable coaching institute. Enrol yourself.
    (d) Start preparing for the interview by participating in mock interview, GD, etc.
    (e) Please remember that Civil Services Examination is the toughest competitive examination. Very serious preparation for at least one year is essential to become successful in this examination.
