I am planning to do M.Phil and Ph.D. on full time basis. What is the eligibility criteria and type of university that offers this course?

  • The marks that you have achieved in both your graduation and your master's degree are really good. But one problem here is that there is a gap of 6 years after that. In a regular course, this gap becomes a hindrance. Since you have mentioned that you want to do a full-time course, it obviously implies that you want to be a part of a university that offers regular courses for higher studies. Here are my suggestions and views regarding this:
    • Cracking this kind of a course, like M.Phil or PhD. in a full-time university, becomes a problem for students who had a long gap in their education.
    • Secondly, you must clear either UGC NET or SET or GATE examination in order to become an eligible candidate for the interview process of M.Phil of PhD. This has two aspects-
      1. Only passing a NET or SET examination will not suffice. If you want to become an eligible candidate for the M.Phil course or PhD., then you must be among the top 15% scorers in those examinations. It is really tough to get that score in an all India basis examination and
      2. Even if you have a clear NET score, it will not guarantee that you will clear the interview process. The interview process is among those selected candidates who have a clear NET or GATE score. But you have to score high in the interview separately to become an M.Phil or PhD. student.
      3. Next, most of the regular institutes have a rule that you must study under a guide of that institute for a while before even applying for the M.Phil or PhD. course. So you must have a good rapport with a guide of whichever full-time institute you wish to join in.
    • I would suggest that you apply for an M.Phil right now from a distance education universities like IGNOU or Amity. You don't find the above regulations in IGNOU or Amity. Although you have a NET or GATE score to become a part of this score,
but alternately, if you clear the IGNOU or Amity entrance examination for the same subjects, you will be eligible for these courses.
    • Since these are distance education universities, no age limit is there to apply in this course.
    • Being a distance education institute, you don't have to attend classes regularly and you can do any job on a part-time basis. From that job, you will not be able to pay the tuition fee of your course, but you will also gather job experience.
    • Lastly, the course fee in distance institutes are far less than full time institutes.

Eligibility Criteria-I have already discussed the eligibility but would still like to sum it up here. You must either clear UGC NET or SET or GATE examination or the respective entrance examination of the distance education centre. The qualifying education to appear in such tests is a master degree in the respective field you are applying for an M.Phil or PHD. and minimum 50% marks in the aggregate.
