    How is internal bleeding treated?

Puzzled about how a bleeding which occurs in the body internally gets detected and treated? Know how doctors deal with internal bleeding problems from this Ask Expert page.

This question has bugged me for long now and I never got satisfying answers for it.

If there was an external bleeding there are a multiple ways to stop it, but what if it is inside? Do doctors just leave it upon the patient's body to recover by just giving them saline and supplements?
Or is there a proper procedure? After all, it would be immensely hard to know which particular part of the body is responsible for internal bleeding. So, how do doctors find the cause and origin of the bleeding. And how do they treat it?

  • Internal bleeding is a severe medical condition and to compensate for bleeding blood may be injected in the initial stages but soon surgery is required to correct the situation.

There are many causes of internal bleeding like big blow to body with jerk or sudden force, weakening of blood vessels, cracking of bones due to weakening of bones, not enough clotting factor in blood to clot at the site of a small rupture etc. The last factor could also be due to taking of anti clotting medicines.

Depending upon the symptoms of pain and other conditions a doctor can go for blood test, CT scan, angiography, ultrasound and endoscopy depending upon the suspected part of body which is bleeding. The diagnosis in internal bleeding is not very direct but has to be inferred from various patient symptoms and behaviour.

In serious cases blood transfusion is required till the internal rupture is healed by the body itself. If bleeding persists surgery is to be attempted after the result of medical tests indicating the location of bleeding.

  • Blood loss happening within the body is known as internal bleeding. It may go without our notice also in the beginning. If the bleeding is more and high it will put pressure on internal structure. It may form a bulge or discoloration under the skin. It will lead to shock or loss of consciousness.
The symptoms of this internal bleeding will vary from location to location in the body and also on the rate at which this bleeding is happening. Bleeding for longer time will result in energy loss, tiredness, shortness of breath, paleness etc.. Gastrointestinal bleeding may cause blood in the stool or vomit. Similarly, urinary tract bleeding can make the urine bloody.
Medication for anticlotting, Hereditary disorder of delay in blood clotting and trauma are the reasons for this.
It is a disorder which is to be treated under the supervision of a doctor. They may go for surgery also. Generally doctor will try to compensate the blood by medication .

  • Your query is not complete. You have not mentioned for what you have raised this query. Internal bleeding is not caused like external bleeding. Suppose a person is having head injury and is being treated during that process there are lot of tests that are done. By those test we can identify the internal bleeding. But I think simply internal bleeding will not cause unless any strong reason. suppose if there is any internal bleeding in eyes then we start getting symptoms in eyes like paining or about vision. As per your query internal bleeding can be identified when there is any injury or if we find any health problems in a particular organ then during tests we can identify.

  • I think the question is for academic purpose and not based on a case.
In case it is regarding a real case, it is suggested not to lose time, but consult a qualified and experienced doctor immediately.

    For general answer:
There can be any number of reasons for internal bleeding. Spotting blod can be from relatively minor causes like small skin ruptures due to applying pressure on bowel motion to very serious and fatal causes. Usually the person feels pain in some part inside. The person can locate at least it in some rough approximation , to enable the doctor to have more details examination. The doctor will suggest further investigative actions based on his clinical examination and initial inference.
