Validity of PhD from Private university with NAAC accreditation

Planning to do PhD? Wondering whether it is possible to study PhD only from a NAAC accreditation University? Here, on this page check out suggestions from experts.

Doing PHD from private university is always a matter of concern. I just want to make sure that if there is any rule that PhD degree of a private university is valid only if it is NAAC accredited?
I want to do PhD from IIMT university in UP which is established in 2016. Is this valid?

  • IIMT University, Meerut has been established under Uttar Pradesh Act Number 32 of 2016 vide the Gazette notified by the Government of Uttar Pradesh dated 16th September, 2016. This private university has been approved by the UGC vide its letter No. F.8-23/2016 (CPP-I/PU) dated 30th November, 2016. So, the PhD degree offered by this university is valid for all purposes provided it is a full-time degree.

  • Even Ph.D., degrees given by any private University also recognised and valid for all practical purposes if the University is recognised by University Grants Commission of India.IIMT University, Meerut has been approved by the UGC vide its letter No. F.8-23/2016 (CPP-I/PU) dated 30th November 2016. This University is established in the year 2016 with all due permissions from the state government. As such you can rest assured that the doctorate degree given by this university is valid for all purposes on par with any other recognised University.

  • Many people equate NAAC to UGC recognition. It is not, National Assessment and Accredition council in Bangalore grades colleges/universities( more relevant to private universities).

Last year their was a report about collges in Delhi (UGC accredited) failing to secure NAAC A++ (https://www.hindustantimes.com/delhi-news/naac-rankings-no-du-college-makes-to-top-grade/story-Y4aFZyKqOmL6tTBot2pxGP.html).

NAAC focusses specifically on infrastructure, research, governance and teaching. This would be more relavent for a PhD.

IIMT, Meerut is listed in the private universities list of UGC, So the PhD would not be an issue w.r.t recognition, it would only be a matter of quality. It would your individual decision to pursue based on what your expectations are, what are the resources available to you and other college options. Some focus on a recognized degree alone, so focus on the institution's reputation. This would be an individual choice as both would be valid.
