Laptop Cooling fan vs Cooling pad - which is the better option?

Facing heating issues with laptop? Confused between choosing cooling fan or cooling pad for laptop? Here, on this ask Expert page get to know the detailed comparison of both and the costs which can be incurred.

My sister is using a Dell laptop (model: Latitude 3340). Since the last two to three days, a message appears on the screen that the cooling fan is not working. Does this mean that the cooling fan needs to be replaced? If so, what would be its cost?

Also, is it a good idea to buy a cooling pad and place the laptop on it? If so, what would be its cost and is it worth a long-term purchase? That is, would it be worth buying as a functional utility for a long time or would it be likely that it would not be really useful for many months? Does it make sense to buy it even on replacing the cooling fan as a sort of additional backup to prevent heating issues in the laptop?

Miniature instrument cooling fans are used in various electronic equipments including laptops for cooling certain circuits and circuit parts and they are vital for the temperature stabilisation inside the equipment.

If the cooling fan is not working it is advisable to replace it immediately so that the laptop does not get due to the excessive heat accumulation inside the machine. There is a vent at the side of the laptop where one can feel the air gushing out when fan is working. One can see by placing one's palm or fingers opposite that vent and feel flow of air there. If fan is not working there will not be any activity there.

If the fan is working and due to some software glitch the message is coming then time being we can ignore it.

Use of cooling pad is not a permanent solution. It is only a temporary measure that also in AC environment so I will not suggest that as a long time measure.

My personal experience says that either of them is not going to give any noticeable change in the performance of the laptop. They may cool the laptop but not to the extent you think. Maximum the decrease will about 1 or 2 degrees centigrade.
But many people will feel that having one of these two will help the performance of the laptop. I will mention a few points for your benefit.
A cooler will have multiple fams and if the laptop is having a fan below the surface, it is better to have a pad.
A fan will help if heat vent is on the edges and is a better option for doing the job in a better way. But never expect a very high difference
The fans are good for working on the flat surface. Cooling pads will make a noise while they are working.
These are the points just I want to mention. You can take the decision based on the facts about your laptop.
