  • It is good that you have ambitions of becoming an entrepreneur in the field of nanotechnology in textiles.

Nanotechnology is an emerging area which is being used or being incorporated in various fields like medical, chemical, engineering, scientific projects, space, hazardous environment etc. The basic concept behind nanotechnology lies in the fact hat the material in very small size (nano size) exhibit special properties and this can be exploited for designing of material to differing specifications. Altering the material at nano levels will completely change its characteristics.

Nano technology is being tried in textile industry to produce softer and stronger cloths. There are new areas emerging by the use of nano techniques in textile as the whole manufacturing process and the finished products are being shaped in different presentations and there is a huge requirement in the fashion and upmarket places. There is no doubt that it may open up a new business opportunity in textile sector.

These things are still in research and trial platforms but the early birds will have the advantage of reaping the benefits of commercialisation in this area.

I am not aware of any specific institute in India which is conducting a program in nanotechnology in textiles but there are many who are conducting in general nanotechnology subject. IITs, IISc and many other colleges conduct these courses and you can check that in details if that meets your objective.

As you have indicated your inclination to do it from abroad, I can suggest some good ones as follows -

    1. North Carolina State University, USA.
    2. RWTH Aachen University, Germany.
    3. University of Boras, Sweden.
    4. Technical University of Liberec (TUL), Czech Republic.
    5. University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA.
    6. Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands.
    7. The University of Bolton, UK.
    8. University of Manchester, UK.
    9. University of Leeds, UK.
    10. Dresden University of Technology, Germany.
    11. De Montfort University, UK.

The above are some of the leading ones in the area of textiles. Some of them are dealing in nanotechnologies also. You will have to find out the details by visiting their sites. Anyway, I have also found out that the one at Sl. No. 4 is having a good course in nanotechnology in textiles. You can check their website.

    Knowledge is power.

  • It is a interdisciplinary technology and this tchnology has brought a new industrial revolution. Nanotechnology is a science that deals with materials 1 to 100 nm in length. This subject is developed on the fact that the properties of materials will change when they are made to nanometer scale. The nanotechnology in textile is the understanding, manipulation and control of matter at nano levels , so that the physical, chemical and biological properties of the materials can be engineered, synthesized and altered to develop improved materials, devices, structures and systems. It is used to develop textile characteristics like high tensile strength, unique surface structure, soft hand, durability, water repellency, fire retardancy, antimicrobial properties etc.

The unique landl new properties of nano materials attracted businesses people also due to their huge economical benefits. The conventional methods used to impart properties to fabrics often do not lead to permanent effects and may lose their functions after laundering or wearing. This problem can be eliminated if nanomaterials are used. Nanotechnology can provide high durability for fabrics. Nano -particles have a large surface area-to-volume ratio and high surface energy. So they will have better affinity for fabrics and leading to an increase in durability of the function. In addition, a coating of nano-particles on fabrics will not affect their breath ability or hand feel.
The textile industry has already impacted by nanotechnology. Research involving nanotechnology to improve performances or to create unprecedented functions of textile materials is flourishing.
It is good that you have interest towards this science. There are many universities in India and abroad also offering good PG courses for engineers in this subject. IISc is having a very good nano technology department and you can join there and do your PG and you can do good work on the uses of nanotechnology in textile industry and can become a good textile business person in the coming days.

  • Nanotechnology is the unique concept where a small particle having length as small as 1- 100 nm is being taken to alter the charecterestics of the clothes providing extra strength and durability of the fabric.Even the texture of the clothes using Nano - technology improves with the application of this concept.
The research in Nanotechnology has multiplied the scope where we can alter the charecterestics and design of the fabrics. However, it is relatively a new area which can offer us promising result in the future.
At present, you can have a post graduation degree in Nanotechnology from Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and also in IITs. It would be better to receive the input of this course from their websites.
The foreign universities offering this course are - The Manchester University - UK, Leeds University UK, Texas university USA etc.

  • Nanotechnology is the study and use of structures between 1 nanometer and 100 nanometers in size. It has a huge scope in coming time. One can find a job as nanotechnologists, specialists or scientists after studying nanotechnology or nanoscience.

Also, a nanotechnologist can seek employment in biotechnology, agriculture, food, genetics, space research, medicine etc. Job opportunities are also available in National Physical Laboratory, Indian Institute of Astrophysics etc. Candidates with PhD can also join as faculty members in Universities and colleges or research fields.

Top Colleges in India offering Nanotechnology are:
1.Department of Physics, IISc, Bangalore 2.Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi Indian 3.Institute of Technology, Kanpur School of 4.Nano Science and Technology, NIT, Calicut 5.Amity Institute of Nano-Technology, Amity University, Noida.

Top Colleges in abroad offering Nanotechnology:

    1.University of California
    2. Berkeley Arizona State University
    3.Harvard University
    4. Columbia University
    5.Northwestern University

  • Nano technology engineering in functional textiles is revolutionizing the concept of clothing that we are going to wear. The potential of this nanotechnology has been recognized by the engineers since a few decades especially in the manufacturing of new materials. The result is expected to improve the overall functionalities of textiles including the existing ones while, possibilities say that it could manufacture materials with entirely new properties using different combinations of functionalities in a single textile material.
A first generation that implemented Nano-enhanced textiles has already benefited from its finishing that involves a new type of coating on the surface of the textiles and having nano-particles to enhance the smoothness of the texture. It is an approach of leading the production towards making hyper-active surfaces that will have functionalities like UV-blocking, anti-static, antimicrobial, flame resistance, wrinkle resistance, water and oil repelling quality, and even have properties of self-cleaning.

Institutions offering Nanotechnology in India are:

    1. Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Roorkee.
    2. Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, [MANIT] Bhopal.
    3. National Institute of Technology, [NIT] Surathkal.
    4. National Institute of Technology, [NIT] Kurukshetra. ...
    5. SRM University Kattankulathur Campus, [SRM] Kanchipuram.
