  • I was a native of East Godavari Dt. of Andhra Pradesh. But I shifted to Hyderabad, Telangana 32 years back. My both the sons were born and brought up in Hyderabad only. To consider one person as a native of a place they will take the place where the children studied consecutively for 7 years. My both sons studied from Class1 to B.Tech in Hyderabad only. So they are natives of Hyderabad, Telangana and their native place is Hyderabad. But in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the local language is Telugu only. My mother tongue and my wife's mother tongue is Telugu only. So their Mother tongue is Telugu only.
The term 'mother tongue' refers to the language a child usually learns in her home from her parents. A child learns to speak by hearing to the parents and other members in the house. So if the father and mother speak in the house in their mother tongue automatically the child's mother tongue will be the parents' mother tongue only. If the father's and mother 's language are different, the child will have more than one mother tongue. Mother tongue will form the base for the child in shaping thinking skills and helps in enhancing speech.
Your mother tongue will be the mother tongue of your parents and your nativity will be decided based on your place of studies.
Even you born in the USA, if your mother and father speak their mother tongue in the house and so your mother tongue will be their mother tongue only. But by birth, you will become a native of USA.

    always confident

  • The common language spoken by the parents during the bringing up of the child is the mother tongue of the child. So if a child later claims it as his or her mother tongue, it is acceptable.

Sometimes a child is given in the custody of a nanny or teacher since early childhood and it may so happen that he picks up another language as an additional learning as nanny is conversant in that only. So the child will be knowing that additional language but his mother tongue will remain same in which he is normally conversing with the parents.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

  • It is a common practice in our country that people move for job from their home state to another state and there is a change of language between the two states. These migrant workers remain in the state where they are working for about more than 11 months in an year and then go to their home town for a few days either during some festivals or some function in the family.

So, for all the practical purposes they are residing in the state where they are now working. They will also admit their children in the local schools where it is not necessary that medium of education will be in their home sate language.

This gives these children an atmosphere of learning additional language in the school but when they are in their house for the ease of communication they talk in their native common language between the parents and that is the mother tongue of the child.

Mother tongue is a derived word from the affection of mother and her talks to the child during the early upbringing when the child picks up it in the most natural form without bothering for syntax and the grammar of the language.

So, mother tongue is something which the child picks up unknowingly in the most primitive ways of human evolution and that language stays in the mind of the child like a deep groove.

    Knowledge is power.

  • Mother tongue is the language in which we spoke and communicated to people at home before we got any formal education. It will be the language in which we are comfortable and able to think. Usually it is the language mother talks to the child , whether she is educated , literate or illiterate.

Native place is usually the place where one has been born, birth registered and/or living during the early years and where one has some umbilical connection. But for those whose parents are were staying at many places due to transferable job, it will be the place where one has some permanent establishment and where one's grandparents etc permanently lived.

Nativity is ascertained for the purpose of priority in admission to higher education, reservations, concessions and even job.

However for the practical purpose of nativity many states prescribe a threshold that one should have lived continuously for a period of 15 years in that state, if not born and educated in that state.

Mother tongue also is vital as there are certain concessions , priority and quotas in education. Sometimes there are exemptions in learning local languages at lower levels for those whose mother tongue is different that the local language.

Children of migrant parents face the problem of getting nativity certificates when going for higher education, job etc. A few parameters are applied and verified before issuing nativity certificates- like birth place , length of residence in the state, passing of SSLC etc from the state etc.

  • In the most common practice, the mother tongue is said to be the language of the forefathers being carried forwarded through generations onto the present age. But I have a doubt of about what would be the scenario in case of inter-caste or inter-religion or in the case wherein both the couples are belonging altogether with different states, for instance, the one is from Bengal & another is from Punjab.

Or this can be understood in terms of common understanding in between the parents & the child.
