  • I presume that "Sandhi vata" is what you mean. It is a painful condition to the various joints in the body. It is a kind of Rheumatism. Ther are two major types of Sandhi Vata-Osteo Arthritis and Rheumatic Arthritis. It starts with pain and inflammation in the joints and on aggravation can result in immobility.

As per Ayurveda basics, Vata is the imbalance of 'Vayu' or "Vayu Dosha'. It is generally associated with ageing wear and tear. Hence it can be managed and not completely cured. But proper medication and regulated food habits can help in preventing aggravation. Ayurveda has effective treatment for Sandhi vata,

The symptoms start as inflammation and pain in the affected joint. It may progress and external application of liniments and balms may give temporary relief. Even pain relieving tablets help only temporarily. Gradually pain and difficulty increases, and affects mobility of the joints and deformity of the affected joints may occur, which restricts mobility of the joint very much. Cold weather season, cool early mornings etc are worse and aggravate the problem. Applying warmth to the affected part may give some relief.

Patient should not discontinue mobility. Moderate mobility exercise should be given to the joints. It is suggested to get medical advise for this as one should not overexert and aggravate.

Patient should not take foods that increase Vayu Dosha. Foods that control vata are preferred.Self medication (other than applying external application pain relieving liniments or balms) should be avoided.

The patient may need customised treatment according to the stage and age of the problem and as per the life style and age of the patient. The treatment may be needed for long periods of many months to give some visible effect. One should keep patience and should not discontinue treatment expecting sudden cure. The treatment may be a combination of external applications including medicinal massage and bath, applying medicated hot press, fomentation and also taking internal medicines. There will be food restrictions too.

  • Sandhi Vata is similar to Arthritis. This problem will be there for aged people. This is due to the ageing effect of your body parts.
    It is not hereditary.
This will be due to lack of sufficient strength in the joints. The problem will start with pain in the joints and then go to inflammation. It may go up to very high and some times we feel we can't move.
The best way to getting it reduced is to get the SUZOK treatment for these pains and other problems. There will not be any medicines to take and need not to apply any medicine outside also.
You have to go and see a SUZOK practitioner in your area. They are available in almost all major cities and towns. They will do the treatment. Definitely, it will come down but the time required will depend on the severity of the problem. Initially, you may have to go 4 days continuously for that treatment after that 2 days in a week may be sufficient. You can try that.

Coming to Ayurveda there are medicines also in this. But it depends on the age of the patient, severity of the problem. So it is advisable to see a good Ayurvedic doctor. He will guide you as required. However, the following are some used in Ayurveda for treatment.

    1. Nirgundi is one of the most commonly used herbs used for this problem. The plant will be useful to reduce swelling as well as pain. The Nirgundi oil can be applied to joints. Leaves can be made into a paste and apply to joints. A leaf decoction can also be made and used.
    2. Dashmool is a mix of ten medicinal herbs that are used to cure a variety of ailments. Dashmool will be made by mixing five roots are of trees and five are of shrubs. These include patala, gambhari, brihati, shalparni and more. Dashmula is effective for this problem. It is an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, analgesic and sedative.
    3. Ajwain is a natural aid to arthritis. This will have anti-inflammatory components. It will have anaesthetic properties. This will help in relieving excessive pain during winter.
    4. Shallaki herb is known to keep joints strong and relieve from any pain. It will reduce the pain, help in diminishing the swelling and increase mobility.
    5. Eucalyptus oil is a common herbal treatment for arthritis. This plant leaves contain tannins which will be helpful in reducing swelling and the pain.

  • Sandhi in sanskrit means joint and vata is the ailment associated with it. Sandhi vata is the ailment of joints commonly known as arthritis. This disease generally sets in the old age and progresses with age.

There are many types of arthritis – rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). The person suffering will be in pain and feels tired. There are many modern medicine and surgical options to get relief from pain in the arthritis and the doctor will prescribe that after thorough check up of the joints and body parameters.

General pain killers (analgesics) help in mitigating mild to moderate pain but do not help in reducing the inflammation of the affected joints. On the other hand the NSAIDs (Nonseroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) relieve pain and inflammation both. Unfortunately, NSAIDS have some side effects and can increase chances of a heart attack, stroke or a stomach bleed.

The other category of medicines is Corticosteroids (also known as steroids or glucocorticoids) which act quickly and reduce inflammation but they can create problems like weight gain, cataracts and high blood pressure. So, If you need to take them for a long time they are to be taken in a small amount each day as per the advice of the doctor.

Another modern medicines belong to the group of DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs) and are used to slow or stop the inflammation of joints and contain the disease. They are popular medicines to treat Arthritis. They are generally administered for a long time.

So the modern medicines are quite advanced but they can only manage the arthritis and can not cure it completely. Though there will be exceptions as per the statistical variations but in most of the cases the disease is only contained and managed.

As per Ayurveda the arthritis is an ailment associated with vata dosha (an ailment due to the wrong aggravation of air in the body). This is attributed to improper digestion.

In Ayurveda the arthritis is claimed to be cured by balancing the vata in the body mainly through life style and dietary measures. One has to drink a lot of water to detox the body time to time.

Ayurveda advocates a discipline in life like take the food in time, go to bed in time, get up early and things like that. People say that it is very difficult to adhere to such tough regime but if one wants to get rid of the ailments then one has to sacrifice the materialistic luxuries.

As per it, one has to take a glass of lemon juice in water in the morning. Fenugreek is to be regularly taken in the food as well as raw after soaking in the water. Ayurveda advises for hot oil massage of the joints time to time. Castor oil and sesame oil are supposed to be giving the best results. The massage is to done lightly.

Meditation is the life line of the Ayurvedic treatment. It reduces the stress level and gives mental energy to cure the ailment. These things are not established scientifically but have been tried and tested by the people who got miraculous results of this life style change with Ayurvedic methods.
