  • Flaky dandruff is seen if the scalp is dry. I guess you have oily skin. Thus, skin flakes are actually sticking to your oily scalp. Make sure to wash your hair properly. Rinse your scalp thoroughly and do not let any dandruff or oil remain on the scalp. Improper cleaning can also aggravate the condition.

You can make use of shampoos or medicated creams that help to get rid of dandruff. Visit a dermatologist to get a prescription.

You can follow home remedies to get rid of dandruff. Some of them are-
    1. Use apple cider vinegar as it is a natural astringent. Once you have rinsed the shampoo out of your hair, rinse your hair and scalp with a solution made by mixing an equal amount of apple cider vinegar and water. You can also leave apple cider vinegar overnight on your scalp.

    2. Instead of using shampoo, use baking soda to clean your hair. It is a good home remedy to get rid of dandruff.

    3. Follow good hair hygiene particularly if you have oily scalp to prevent dandruff and hair fall. Thus, wash your hair frequently and thoroughly to get rid of dandruff and other impurities.

    4. Stop using hair gels, hair sprays and other hair styling products available commercially. They can worsen the situation and increase oil production on the scalp.

    5. Follow a diet that is rich in healthy fats, vitamin B and zinc to prevent fungal infection that can cause or aggravate dandruff on the scalp.

  • Dandruff is a condition of skin especially scalp area which produces dandruff flakes and sometimes itching is also associated with it. Few people might experience the inflammation of the skin along with this condition and then it can turn into a severe condition known medically as seborrhoeic dermatitis. Managing dandruff requires to take care of the scalp regularly by keeping it clean and dry with the dryers so that the oils secreted from the oily skins are routinely removed from the scalp. Please note that in dandruff condition the rate of production of skin cells increases significantly and whatever amount of cleaning is done the new cells take place of the old ones removed with cleaning. So, it is an irritating and embarrassing thing to have dandruff and we have to mange it patiently.

Though exact cause of the dandruff is not known but hereditary and environmental reasons are attributed to its growth. Some researchers have put its connection with stress conditions also. It is also believed that good lifestyle, discipline and proper food habits are also linked to controlling its growth.

There are many tips and tricks to manage and arrest the affect of this condition and some of the prominent one are as follows.

    1. Washing the hairs with some rough substance in a liquid base is an age old therapy for dandruff and works well. For example mixing coarse grounded gram dal with curd and applying it to the scalp for some time and then washing with a light shampoo is one of the proven ways to clean the scalp. It can be tried a few times in a week.

    2. Those who have severe dandruff conditions should keep their hairs short so that cleaning and washing them will be easier.

    3. Doctors generally prescribe anti fungal creams containing ketoconazole or itraconazole which are quite effective in treating the dandruff conditions but have their own side effects also.

    4. Neem leaves (Indian lilac) are used in treating the dandruff. For this take a cup of Neem leaves in 4 cups of water and boil it. Let it cool down and stain it and keep in a bottle. This solution is to be used after washing the hairs as a rinsing agent. It can be used 3-4 times a week. Neem leaves are well known for their anti fungal and antibacterial activities.

    5. Apple Cider Vinegar and tea tree oil combination is also used in treating the dandruff condition. It maintains the proper balance of pH factor in the scalp and retards the growth of yeast cells. It is a good hair cleaner and also clears the clogged pores. In this formulation 2 table spoons of vinegar is mixed with equal amount of water and to this half tea spoon of tea tree oil is added. This solution is used to massage the scalp for a few minutes before washing the hairs. It can be used 2-3 times a week.

    6. Extra virgin olive oil is also used for getting relief in dandruff conditions. For this, warm olive oil is to be massaged on the scalp and then the hairs are to be wrapped and covered with a towel. After an hour the hair can be washed with a light shampoo. This is to be repeated a few times in a week.

If you feel increased redness or abrasions on the scalp then it will be better to get it examined by a skin specialist who can guide in a focused way depending upon the severity of the dandruff.

  • Dandruff treatment requires frequent cleaning of scalp and hairs as a long gap between the cleaning sessions will create excessive dandruff condition. There is no known cure for dandruff and it has to managed with the many home remedies or antifungal anti bacterial shampoos.

I have used one medical shampoo named as 'Selsun' which was containing selenium sulphide and it was effective in reducing the dandruff significantly. It has to be used twice a week. It is a chemical formulation and may have some side actions also. You can take medical advice before using it.
