I got score of 347 in NEET 2019. My percentile is 86.49. It appears that I will not get any good govt.medical college. In this circumstances I wish to switch over to B.Tech Biotechnology. I have short listed NIIT University Neemrana, Rajasthan. My question is whether my choice of the course and university is suitable or not?

  • B. Tech Biotechnology is a good course with more chances for jobs abroad than in India. You can pursue this course. When we go through the reports and reviews about this institute there is a mixed response. This is a private university with good infrastructure and facility. But over a period of time, there is some deterioration in the quality of education and teaching. There are chances of campus recruitment. There are some other private universities like Amity University and SRM university which are offering these courses. You can try those universities also.

  • You are having apprehensions of getting an ordinary Medical College due to your present score in NEET. This is all right but I feel that the career as a doctor is still a better option in our country seeing the requirement of the doctors especially in towns and remote places. Comparatively, Biotechnology is not a more lucrative option. You can reconsider your inclination for Biotechnology once again.

Anyway, for Biotechnology there are many institutions in the country and you can sort list them as per your convenience. Once you get admission in Biotechnology course you can start applying in the companies for campus recruitment. Some of the good companies are Panacea Biotechnology, Uniq Biotechnology, Bharat Biotech, Biocon etc. If you work hard and focus in your studies you can definitely get chance to get recruitment through campus mode.

NIIT University Neemrana, Rajasthan is one of the top institutions for Biotechnology in Rajasthan and you can go for it. However on national level some of the top institutes are -

    1. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
    2. Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Uttarakhand.
    3. Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab.
    4. Delhi Technological University, New Delhi.
    5. National Institute of Technology, Warangal, Telangana.
    6. Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

  • From the point of view of getting a job I feel that going for medical course will be a good option. The reason is even if you do not get a job after medical course you can work under a doctor and gain experience and then join a hospital on visiting basis. This option you do not have after completing the course of Biotechnology. You can take advantage of this fact and consider joining a mediocre medical college for pursuing your doctor degree.

After doing the course in Biotechnology you will have to try for a job in Biotech Food and Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture Sector, Teaching in Universities etc. If you get admission in some good institute (including NIIT University Neemrana, Rajasthan) and work hard for your goal, you can get opportunity in some good Biotech company through campus recruitment.

    Knowledge is power.

  • With the present score, you are under impression that you may not get a medical seat in a coveted medical college but still there is a hope for a seat in less known medical college.
If that happens, you should accept it considering the last scope of medical profession. You need to consider the surge of population of India and accordingly the availability of doctors per thousand of the patient as surveyed was hardly 21 in number.
Hence choosing the medical profession would be best choice considering the scope of serving the ailing patient. The employment potential of a MBBS doctor is still very lucrative if willing to serve in remote villages.
A post graduation degree such as M.S or M.D would enhance your career prospects in the area of surgery and medicine respectively.
Of course, Biotechnology is the relatively new area having huge potential of growth if admission is taken in some reputed colleges.
NIIT university Neemrana Rajsthan is considered to be one of the best institutions but you can look for other institutions as well. Some are listed below-
    1) Delhi Technological university, New Delhi.
    2) Indian Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand
    3) Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana
    4) Ranchi Agricultural University, Ranchi
    5) Agricultural University, sabour, Bhagalpur.etc.
