Eligibility for CBSE 10th board exam

Are you having a query regarding eligibility criteria for CBSE Board exams? Searching for details of this criteria online? Find advice for experts on this Ask Expert page.

My son DOB is 20 May 2008. He is currently studying in 5th std. He is one year behind as he had to repeat the year when he changed school. So I am worried if there will be any problem in appearing 10th exam. Is there an upper age limit for writing CBSE 10th and 12th exams?

  • Your son is in 5th standard, his date of birth is 20th May 2008.

The CBSE as such has not set the age limits and it follows the guidelines laid down by the respective State or union territory in which the school is situated. Most parents check the KV school guidelines and the state school age limits. Based on this, For 10th standard, the age would be 14-16. For XII standard, generally there is no upper age limits as long as there is no break after XI.

Going by this he should be eligible. I would suggest that you check with the present CBSE school administration office or the Principal, they would also be able to guide you.

  • The age limit is generally followed by the schools as prescribed and specified by the state or union territory where the school is located. State to state some variations are there. In general the student should have attained an age of 14 years for seeking admission in the class 10. There is no upper limit for the age but in some states (like UP) an upper limit of 17 is also prescribed.

Your son's date of birth is 20 May 2008 and he is in class 5 so he has completed 11 years by now. With that calculation he will have completed 15 years when he takes admission in class 10. So it is all right and there is no problem on that account.

  • Many schools have a age criteria only for admission to standard I which is 6 years. The maximum age limit may not be considered but as many schools are looking for cent percent result, they may have their own rules or regulations apart from the state, Central or appropriate board.
Kindly contact the school that your are looking for, they may give you more clear picture. but as per details given, I don't think you will face any problem.

  • You should not worry for your kid as there is no upper age limit to give exam of 10th class though a student should be of minimum 14 years of age to write exams of 10th class. Also, there is a maximum of 3 attempts one can have to clear the exams.
