  • Why there are no dedicated government jobs for Computer and IT students?

Have a query about government jobs in the field of computers and IT? Want to know the reasons for not having such options? On this page check out the responses from our ISC experts for your query and understand the reasons.

If you see any state civil service examination there are general quota jobs like deputy collector , STI , PSI etc. Along with that state conducts special exams for electrical and civil engineering students for PWD, state electricity board for which mechanical students are eligible too. Question is why Computer and IT students don't have government dedicated exams and posts?

  • There are government jobs for B.Tech Computer Science or IT pass outs. But they are limited. There is an organisation called NIC which will be taking care of all IT requirements and computer requirements for the governments and they will be employing these people. Each department is having its own IT cell in which they employ B.Tech graduates in computer science or IT.
There are jobs for B.Tech IT or CS even in banks also. There will be a separate wing for their IT requirements. They will be looking after the IT requirements of all branches of the bank. SBI is also having a separate wing for this. They will take care of ATMs and their computer systems.
    B. Tech CS or IT graduates are also eligible to attend a written test for civil services and state group services but they have to decide on the optional subject what they wanted to write.

  • There is no such centralised Govt exam only for computer engineers but the fact is that as computer engineers are required everywhere their total demand is quite good and one can apply in the organisation of one's own interest. Every industry recruits computer engineers for its various branches and groups. They are the vital ingredients of the work flow system.

Some of the apex organisations in our country where a computer engineer can look for job are -
    1. National Informatics Centre (NIC).
    2. Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).
    3. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
    4. Center for Development of Advance Computing (CDAC).
    5. Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL).
    6. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
    7. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
    8. National Projects Construction Corporation Limited (NPCC).
    9. National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Apart from these there are other PSUs where good opportunities are there and these organisations are - Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Coal India Limited (CIL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Heavy Engineering Corporation Ltd. (HEC), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) and Vizag Steel.

    Knowledge is power.

  • E governance is just catching up in govt sector. It is slowly being implemented. Many services are being migrated to online service. By and by the IT sue will be more than the manual jobs in Govt sector.

For the time being during the migration stage, the migration work is given in contract to established IT firms. Then the desk job operators(Assistants, clerks etc who were doing such jobs manually) are trained on the job. The software and hardware maintenance are given in contract for a certain period to the established Hardware, software service organisations.

But as the computerisation and E governance spreads and becomes a sizable area in govt establishments and governance, govt sector also may need dedicated IT officers. That will become imperative as per needs of security, cost, practicability, control etc. Till then the phased transformation will be by adding a parameter of 'computer knowledge' or training in computer and IT related matters , for new recruits.

Many Public sector undertakings like nationalised banks already have their IT department and separate IT personnel.

  • The Government jobs for Computer and IT students are very limited. Most of the IT related work is usually outsourced to IT companies such as Tata Consultancy Services(TCS), Infosys, etc., As we all know, Government employees are a mixed age population. It is nearly a daunting task to train all of them to work in a digital way. So, the Government sector usually outsources new digitalization work and once they are done it is usually handed over to the current staff in those sectors. The IT companies give a knowledge transition to the employees on how things work. And usually, there will be few support people who will be available from these IT companies to help the Government employees if they encounter any issue in the new product.

You might have read in news recently that TCS has won a deal from India's civil aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to digitize its daily operations. Previously, Infosys had implemented their Banking product Finacle at India post. This shows how the IT work is outsourced and hence less IT jobs in Government sector.
