  • Can I safely delete( clean) thumbnails from my smartphone to save space?

Are you facing issue with how to save space on a smartphone? Looking out for advice regarding whether thumbnail can be safely deleted from the phone? On this Ask Expert page find out how to proceed and not have any trouble later.

I am using' Avast clean up' in my smartphone . I use it periodically to clean the junk and save space. In the selection page I had ticked Hidden cache, visible cache and empty folders.

But I had not ticked Thumbnails, Whatsapp (exported data) etc even though they show used space of 1.26 Gb and 249 MB respectively. The reason is I am not sure whether I can 'clean' these safely and I will not face any trouble later.

Please answer my doubts as to whether I can clean these files also with my cleaning software.

  • Thumbnail files can be deleted from your smartphone. First, open the explorer file. Then DCIM folder. Now you delete the thumbnail file. Sometimes Thumbnail may not appear on DCIM. In such a case, one has to enable show hidden files option.

Many times deleting these files may not be safe. All your photos will be compressed and stored as Jpg files in this file. Thumbnail will provide a good service to smooth opening and browsing of images that are stored. If you remove this file your gallery app will become slow.

  • Thumbnails are the smaller replicas of the main image or picture files and are used to navigate to the desired thumbnail and select it to see in enlarged shape. They have only this use and one can delete them while cleaning the system. Only thing is when next time you use the gallery app then it will again make them for easy navigation. So those who are not using the gallery app frequently can go for that option.

Whatsapp stores all the media files in a different folder under Whatsapp main folder and one can go there and manually remove unwanted files. This is a laborious method. If you use delete all option then all the files will be removed including those which are important for you. So, in such cases deleting selectively is required.

Inside the Whatsapp main folder there is another folder where all the sent files are stored. This can be deleted as they are already available in other folders there. This is the one which appears as Whatsapp exported data in the cleaning program. So, this can be ticked to be deleted.

I want to give a tip for file management in the smartphone in this reference. We should make a personal folder in the main memory or additional memory card of the phone and move or copy important files there from all other places. After this we can simply select all the files and delete all of them in one go. That can be conveniently done as deleting file by file is a long and tedious process.

    Knowledge is power.
