  • Which one is better, a Laptop, Notebook or a tablet

Confused between buying a laptop or a tablet for basic needs like surfing, emails and simple games? Wondering how to select the best of the two? On this ask Expert page you can check out the advice provided by our experts and decide which one to buy.

My friend is an engineer and working with a construction company. He is planning to buy a laptop but when he searched for it on internet, he found many options like notebook, chromebook and tablet. Now he is confused as which is best for him in a middle range of 30000/- rupees. To give a brief of his requirement :
    1. He is a mechanical engineer and would like to use the laptop for CAD drawing and other engineering softwares.
    2. He would also like to use it for basic needs like, surfing, emails, facebook, etc.
    3. His children would be playing few games ( not heavy games)
    4. He would like to use it to watch movies, net series and for listening to music.
    5. He would also like to use it for office works like working in word, excel. presentation, etc.

What do you think he should buy, a laptop, a notebook/chromebook or a tablet and do provide your clarification for the selection and budget.

  • Hello Varghese,

I think you should go for Laptop it will be more convinent with your usage requirements.
And you will be using CAD for that so minimum requirement for that is 8 GB RAM and 2 GB Graphic, but prefer 16GB DDR4 and 4 GB Graphic to avoid lagging issue, it will save more time while working.

For this configuration you might need to increase your budget a little say 40K.

Let me know if you have any doubts.
    Thank you.

  • Based on your requirements I think that this laptop Acer Aspire 3 Core i3 will be perfect match.

  • Hi Varghees, recently, my uncle has bought Lenovo Ideapad S145 - 15IWL. it has Intel i5 8265U 1.5GHz, 4GB RAM DDR4, 1TB HDD, 15.6 inch Full HD display and Windows 10 Home.
This laptop comes at 39,990/- and Intel Core i3 version comes at 30,490/-.
In terms of build quality and display, it looks absolutely gorgeous. i5 CPU is better suited for CAD and other designing softwares that your friend might be using down the road.
But if he can't increase the budget to 40,000/- then Intel Core i3 is the next best option. You can also opt for AMD Ryzen laptops, they are nearly 4000/- cheaper than Intel counterparts.

  • engineering software(s) are tough and heavy to use:

    1. Such software asks space and their files are heavy
    2. A fast processor is a must or your software will hang.
    3. Multi-tasking and rendering asks ram space so you need RAM.
    4. You need good and latest graphic card, NVIDIA GEFORCE is advised.

Go forintel i3 or i5, 1 TB space, 4gb RAM

  • Even though tabs and notebook are more compact than a laptop, for large scale use of operation laptop is more recommended as compared to notebook and tabs. Yes, with the coming years, all features of a laptop might come in notebooks and tabs with RAM and ROM size greater than the laptop as technology advances but as per present situations, a laptop is still versatile.
