  • Need career advice regarding fashion designing.

aspiring to opt for fashion designing after doing BCom graduation? Confused whether it is worth it or one should opt for masters in the graduating degree and then go for civil services? Find answers on this Ask Expert page.

I am interested in fashion designing but currently I am doing BCom and I am thinking of pursuing fashion designing after my graduation which is next year. I am thinking of going for masters in design but I don't know whether that would be beneficial or not because I don't have any basic knowledge of what they teach in the bachelor's degree and short term courses don't offer good placement.
My parents don't really want me to pursue it and they advised me to try for civil service exam and for some time I also considered it because I couldn't convince them for fashion designing. Now I am really confused because I don't know if masters would be a good option or not as it's a very professional course.

  • Any course is good provided you are interested in doing that course and if you are qualified otherwise. If you have no interest you cannot concentrate on the studies and you may not be able to get into a good job.

After graduation, you can do the MA fashions design course. Any graduate with a minimum of 50% marks is eligible for admission. There will be a written entrance test and students qualifying in the written test will be asked to attend a group discussion and then an oral interview. This procedure varies from institute to institute. But all the institutes will have an entrance test.

The following are some of the good institutions for doing this course.

Top Institutes offering M.A. Fashion Design

    1. Pearl Academy of Fashion (PAF)
    2. National Institute of Fashion Technology(NIFT)
    3. School of Fashion Technology (SOFT)
    4. Army Institute of Fashion Design (AIFD)
    5. National Institute of Design (NID).

You can get the details by visiting their websites,

Fashion designers after completing their MA will have good chances of getting a job.

There are many fashion designing companies, fashion shops, malls, fashion magazines, educational institutes, film industry so on who will offer good jobs for the people who completed their PG in Fashion Technology. The salary and perks depends on the company. There are chances for career growth also. If you have some interest you can become a freelancer. But it is always better to gain some experience before you start on your own.

Coming to civil services examinations, nothing like it provided you have an interest and the will to work hard. It is a tough issue and all depends on your efforts. But one thing I want to tell you is that you can appear for the IAS examinations even after completing your MA also. So decide after thinking thoroughly.

  • It is said that a person can get success in his life generally in the field in which he has an interest, inclination and liking. There are innumerable cases in the society where people did not go for formal education but achieved in their life something which a qualified person also can not dream of. For example great singers, writers, business tycoons, artists, movie star and many more like that are from a very humble background and were never interested in the studies. Passion is which makes a person reach the highest point in the desired career line. From this angle it makes sense to go for the subject of your liking.

Now coming to the practical part of it. I am afraid that the fashion industry along with its background units like fashion designing, textile manufacturing, readymade clothes, fabric design and processing is going through a tough phase and there is a big international trade competition going on and from that perspective it is presently not a very good career option from job point of view. Still, if one has interest and can achieve merit position in his fashion designing course, there are good chances of campus or direct recruitment by the big companies and lifestyle firms.

You are doing B.Com. There is no problem this will help you when you work in the commercial wing of the fashion designing. So this knowledge acquisition will not go waste. Now you are willing to do Masters in fashion designing. I will suggest you to do some certificate course or diploma course in fashion designing from some fashion institute so that you get the fundamentals of this line clearly understood. After that only it will be better to go for Masters. Then you will have better chances also to get the top positions in the batch. It is not necessary that this fundamental course in fashion designing is to be done from a top ranking institute. This is only required for learning the basics and any good academic place will do the needful.

There are many good fashion technology institutes in the country where one can go to pursue for advanced courses or Masters. Some of these leading institutes are J D Institute of Fashion Technology (Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore), National Institute of Fashion and Technology (many places in India, about 16 places), Pearl Academy (Delhi, Noida, Jaipur and Mumbai), Arch College of Design and Business (Jaipur), MIT ADT University (Pune) and National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad).

    Knowledge is power.

  • As far as possible, one should choose the course of ones likeness and this has to reviewed with your cool mind. Once, you have made up your mind for the achievement of your goal, stick to it. Success is achievable with your single minded devotion and the degree of passion in your related course and any pressure from the parental side would rather create ambiguity in the right selection of the course.
As regard to the career of fashion - design, you should be creative, should have the artistic ability to sketch the design, familiar with the fundamentals of CAD and its application would save your time. You should have the ability to convince the people regarding your choice in making design apart from your innovative idea to push your design in the market - segment.
With your present degree of B.Com, you can go in M.A in Fashion - designing comprising two year duration from a reputed university.
You have to clear both written and oral test prior to your final selection and hence some guidance from the professional institute would be essential.During the learning process, you may have the chance to meet some prospective employer during the process of internship and exploit this chance for your absorption.
There are a few reputed institutes offering diploma courses and some of the same are given below -
    1) National School of Fashion Technology in varied locations in India.
    2) Pearl Academy - Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai
    3) MIT ADT university, Pune.

  • Dear Ayushi, I would really not suggest you to go for Master's in Fashion Designing without having basic knowledge of it. I would request you to complete B.com and parallelly try for some basic courses as a part time which your parents would definitely allow to do in case its affordable and provided you don't hurt their sentiments. You can start designing some clothes or costumes based on your knowledge and share those within your circle so that you get some business or enquiries which can prove the benefit of you learning Fashion Designing to your parents.

Post you are done with basic, you can try for higher level and master yourself in same domain.
