    What is Fatty Liver?. Is this the same as the disease liver cirrhosis. I have been heard that fatty liver is a disease that comes due to excessive alcoholic drinking.   • Fatty liver is also known as Hepatic Steatosis. Fatty liver is due to the accumulation of fat in the liver. As you know liver is the second largest organ in the human body. The function of the liver is to process the foods and filter harmful items from our blood. A little fat in the liver may not have any problem. But too much accumulation may make the liver to swell. This will lead to the failure of the liver.

    The fat can accumulate if the person drinks a lot of alcohol and this is known as AFLD. ( Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.). It can happen in other cases also and known as NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease). The reasons for this may be overweight, high blood sugar and insulin resistance.

    How to identify the same :

    A person with Fatty liver will have the following symptoms:

    1. Not feeling Hungry
    2. Weight loss
    3. Weakness
    4. Bleeding from nose
    5. Yellow skin and eyes.
    6. Itching sensation on the skin
    7. Fatigue.

    The following precautions are suggested for a person having this disease.

    1. Stop drinking alcohol
    2. Eat no carbohydrates. Consume fruits and leafy vegetables.
    3. No meat
    4. No smoking
    5. No snacks or junk food.

    The following is the Ayurvedic treatment for the above problem:
    1. Drink Aloe Vera Juice. This is the main ingredient in the medicines used for this problem.
    2. There is an Ayurvedic medicine called Triphala Churna. It contains Amla
    3. Punarnava Powder can be taken with honey daily twice.
    4. Take excess water and add raw rice and cook it. Then filter the water and consume that filtered water.
    5. Take fruits.
    6. Consume more buttermilk. But never go for Curd.

  • Fatty liver is the condition that the fats are deposited around the liver. If the accumulation is very minor, it would not create any problem in the functioning of the liver. According to accumulation of the fats, it may be categorised as fatty liver -1, fatty - liver-2 and fatty liver -3. With the higher number of fatty liver, swelling of liver can be seen causing normal functioning of the liver.
    Though the functioning of liver is to process food and filter the toxins so as to keep sound health, the fatty liver would disrupt such functioning. Fatty livers are of two types - alcoholic or non alcoholic. Alcoholic liver indicates that the patient is habituated alcoholic leading to accumulation of fats. However, nonalcoholic fatty liver arises due to excess consumption of some medicines Ayurvedic or otherwise having its detrimental effects on the liver.
    Following precautions should be taken in case of fatty liver-
    1) Stop taking any medicine not prescribed by the doctors such as pain killers, steroid medicines etc.
    2) No more consumption of alcohol.
    3) Abstaing from Coca - cola, Pepsi, Pizza, Burger etc.
    4) Avoid using vegetables containing excess oils and spices.
    5) Abstaing from smoking.
    Remedy -
    Fatty liver condition is reversible and once the condition is made favourable adhering to discipline in terms of taking food, Abstaing from Alchol, Avoidance of Spurious drugs, the liver would restore to normal functioning. The following remedies would prove to be helpful-
    1) Consume Aloevera - juice of any reputed brand by taking 15 ml along with equal amount of water twice daily preferably in the empty stomach.
    2) Consume at least two glass of hot water mixed with lemon - juice in the morning in the empty stomach. Continious use for at least three months can reverse the condition.
    3) Take Trifala - churna approx one tea - spoon along with hot water after the dinner.
    4) Amla powder contains a lot of antioxidants coupled with enriched VitaminC and its consumption of one tea - spoon after each meal followed by hot water can eliminate the fats deposited around liver. It should be used for at least three months.
    5) Consume liberal amount of citrus fruits such as grapes, oranges, lemon etc regularly in order to eliminate the fats accumulated in the liver.
    6) If possible take up fasting once in a week, you may take up lemon water in between the course of fasting. Apart from liver - issue,this may reduce body weight due to enhanced metabolism.

  • Fatty liver disease is generally due to the accumulated deposits of triglyceride in the liver. It starts as a simple fatty liver but gradually degrades further finally leading to the liver failure. The initial stages of the fatty lever are known as steatosis which deteriorates to steatohepatitis and fibrosis which further complicates in the terminal stage to cirrhosis and/ or hepatic cancer.

    The fatty lever condition is known as hepatic steatosis also though in Ayurveda it is known as Yakrt Roga. The chances of getting this ailment are more in obese persons. The condition is preventive with lifestyle management but once the situation worsens then it is a life threatening issue and can be a fatal condition. Drinking alcohol is also a prominent reason for fatty liver condition and that is the reason why doctors ask the patients to refrain from alcohol. Further, obese persons having resistance to insulin are vulnerable to get this condition.

    In Ayurveda the treatment of fatty lever condition is attempted in a holistic way and the people are requested to adhere to certain lifestyle changes which are very crucial to lessen the fat deposition in the body. The drug of choice for this ailment is Arogyavardhini Va?i and Triphala Guggulu along with pathya which is also a part of the treatment. Pathya means the Ayurvedic dietary regime (what to take and what not to take) and physical exercises associated with it. Pathya is the art of taking type of food and keeping a control on our unnecessary food indulgences. In our Ayurvedic scriptures these things are mentioned very clearly, though we are forgetting them as we are not in continuous touch with them.

    In Ayurveda there is a great emphasis on the natural things and people having fatty liver condition are advised to reduce weight, take fruits in plenty, include legumes in diet, avoid oily and fried things, avoid junk food, consume home grains, opt for fish or lean meat items etc. These measures help a lot in maintaining a good lifestyle which is an important premises to keep the fatty liver condition at a bay.
