  • Genuine suggestions for MTech ECE

Planning to opt for Masters in engineering? Searching for detailed information regarding the best private colleges which offer specializations like VLSI and good placements? Here, ISC experts shall respond to your query.

I am a 2016 ECE batch passout from one of the best govt engineering colleges in Kerala. I had joined Accenture via campus placement and worked till May,2019. I lost interest in IT and decided to quit it to pursue MTech for a job in core companies. But in Gate 2020, I could be landing a rank of around 4500 which diminishes my chance of MTech in IIT or a top NIT.
Please suggest next steps which could help me in getting a core electronics job with a better pay?
How are the placements in private institutions like BITS, VIT etc for specialization like VLSI?

  • Though scoring a high percentile beyond 99 and more would land you better institutions such as IIT, JNU, Regional Engineering colleges etc for your induction into M.Tech programme but for the same, you need not waste a year for writing the GATE test.
The alternative rout is to seek for admission in one of the following institutions where you have to clear both the written test and the accompanying interview so as to get a seat in M.Tech in ECE. You may look into -
    1) BIT Meshra.
    2) Delhi University.
    3) JNU
    4) Manipal University etc.
Now coming towards the course, M.Tech in ECEwould be a wise choice provided you choose the specialisations as indicated below with the merits of such selections.
The specialisations in this stream are indicated below -
    1) VLSI System
    2) Communication and Signal - processing ( CSP)
    3) Control
    4) RF
    5) Embedded and Image Processing
    6) Few Interdisciplinary Courses
Of all, VLSI is supposed to be good and would remain the best choice but equally tough to get into. CSP is the next choice for landing into an attractive placement.
However, your academic career from class ten level to M.Tech with the consistent performance would attract your employer to select you with the top priority.

  • Though you are an Engineering degree pass out having experience in the company like Accenture, you could have continued your work in IT, because when you quit a company it will difficult to continue with your studies and you will have a break in your career. Most companies would not prefer a person who is having a break in a career without having sufficient reason. Since you have resigned to pursue M.Tech degree and your score in Gate 2020 is 4500. Now you are looking to have a core electronics job with better pay. There is a sufficient number of companies having cutting edge R&D work like Qualcomm, LSI, Broadcom, AMD.

These companies are having good domains and the available talent is small. If you are having good skills and aptitude, definitely you can get into these companies which pays better than the IT companies like TCS, Infosys etc. The companies which I have mentioned is having to join bonuses and profit-sharing giving to the best performers in the company. Many of these also have benefits like a car or home loan with health and medical benefits. Prepare for the placements for these companies and you will get a good job in your life.

  • When you are working and going for an interview for a new job you will have an edge to bargain for a higher salary. If you for an interview as an unemployed, they will try to fix you at a lesser scale. It is a universal truth. You got a good job in a very good company. While working there you might have done your M Tech. Anyhow no what is the course of action you have to take.
Try for a good college where you will get a seat in M.Tech with the present score and join in that college and complete your M.Tech. You will get a stipend also for doing this M.Tech. Once you come out well with your M Tech degree, you will have good chances to get a job. You can even join as a lecturer in some college and start teaching and while teaching you can do your Ph.D. also so that you can progress in the teaching line.
There are some government institutions where you will get a job based on your GATE score. Look for such advertisements and apply them.
You can place your CV with M Tech qualification and experience in various job sites and search for better jobs. VLSI and CSP are supposed to be the best choices for your M. Tech.
