My colleague has completed his 4 years sandwich pattern engineering diploma in 2000 and joined B.Tech/BE but due to various reasons could not complete his B.Tech/BE within the stipulated time. Now he is working abroad and would like to complete his graduation for his career growth. He checked AMIE but as it is under the case, he is hesitant to join the same. I would like our experts to guide him to complete his graduation in any field. He is much interested in management but working in the engineering section.
    a) What are the various options available after having completed his diploma(Engineering) after 12th or HSC?
    b) Is there any approved and recognized correspondence or distance education from where he can enroll and complete his graduation?
    c) According to you, which is the best way of completing his graduation and why?
    d) Is enrolling for foreign universities through online study or fast-track mode a good option/choice and are the certificates valid everywhere?
    e) Name some AICTE/UGC recognized/approved universities in India to enroll for further studies?
    f) Any other points to be kept in mind while opting for such courses/colleges/universities for graduation or further studies?

  • Graduation in which field? Is he interested in Engineering only or in any other field? As he has already completed his HSC, he can go for a graduate degree in Science or Arts or Commerce through a correspondence course. He can do graduation in arts as a private candidate also.

For doing Engineering graduation by correspondence also there are some recognised institutes. I am giving the list below.
    1. Acharya Nagarjuna University
    2. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University
    3. Indira Gandhi National Open University
    4. Tejaswi Educational Academy, Hyderabad
    5. National Institute of Business Studies, New Delhi.

But you have to go through their website to get full details and see which is suitable for you and better for you. Accordingly, you can advise your friend. But he has to enrol as a new student and complete the course.

Many foreign universities may be giving online classes and degrees but they are just useful for the sake of saying that we are engineering graduates. It may not be useful for progressing your career.

  • You have raised certain queries in relation to further studies of your friend and you would get explanation of these questions as indicated below -
a)You want to know the option available to your friend after acquiring the diploma course.
In response to this query, he has to see his final aggregate secured in the stream with which he was persuing his diploma. If his marks are beyond the level of 75 percent, he can directly be admitted in the second year in any regular Enginnering - college in the same stream. But in case of your friend working in foreign, the best option would be to select the course of Indira Gandhi National Open University especially in the stream with which he has passed out diploma. Here he would get two advantages firstly he would get entire study - materials at his residence and the secondly he would get an opportunity to attend a session of doubt removal cropping up in different subjects. Your friend would get help of the eminent professors clarifying your subject related doubts.
    b) There are many distance education courses approved from UGC and recognised distance education courses helping him to persue his education. Some of these are as follows -
    1) Karnataka Open Unversity
    2) Utkal University of Distance Education
    3) Acharya Nagarjuna University
    4) Indira Gandhi National Open University
    5) Kota Open University etc
    c) The best way of undertaking his graduation course is the Indira Gandhi National Open University because of the superiority of the course structure provided by them and moreover, the course is well recognised in the different part of world. The courses are approved by the ministry of education, Government of India.
    d) Enrolment in a foreign university may not be helpful in all the times. Kindly go through the website to check the recognition status of such colleges.
    e) I have indicated the names of the universities in section b where all the universities have UGC affiliation.
    f) Before taking up the course of graduation, your friend should ensure the recognition status of the Unversity. Secondly he should check the source of study guidance from such university. Availability of any doubt removal session as adopted by IGNOU would also help them in strengthening his concept.

  • First of all as he is working abroad, let him check up if there are any institutions available there suitable to him to pursue his career. Otherwise the alternative is to obtain degree from distance learning. So he has to check up which courses or which institutions are recognised there a equivalents and accepted for jobs or promotions. As he had already ruled out AMIE and "is much interested in management but working in the engineering section", let him check up the career prospects and take up an enabling general degree course in science, arts or commerce, or business administration. There are many Indian universities giving degree by distance learning mode. IGNOU is also suitable. He may also try if any foreign institution is giving management degree by distance eucation which is recognise at your place.

What are the various options available after having completed his diploma(Engineering) after 12th or HSC?
After diploma one can join B.Tech by the lateral entry scheme . One can also join for general degree courses. Taking up graduate courses by distance learning is also possible.

Is there any approved and recognized correspondence or distance education from where he can enrol and complete his graduation?
Yes.IGNOU and various universities in Indi are giving this facility.

According to you, which is the best way of completing his graduation and why?
As he is working distance education will be most suitable.

Is enrolling for foreign universities through online study or fast-track mode a good option/choice and are the certificates valid everywhere?
This has to be decided after checking various points like acceptability of the course in the place of working, the mode and expenses etc. It is suggested to visit the web sites of such institutions.

Name some AICTE/UGC recognized/approved universities in India to enroll for further studies?
There are many universities and IGNOU too. All major universities are recognised. You may visit the web site of UGC and AICTE too for latest information.

Any other points to be kept in mind while opting for such courses/colleges/universities for graduation or further studies?
There are not much issues when enrolled in a recognised university in India. One should only monitor the information and announcements coming intheir websites regarding admission and other details
