  • Without going into the technical details I shall answer by taking practical points.
    1. Screen technology: Now LED screens are more popular.
    2. Screen Resolution: HD and FHD (1080p) are sufficient for our optimum needs and to the present popular sizes.
    3. Screen size: Depends on the size of the room.32,42 and 48 inch sizes are now very popular. For best viewing the viewer should be at a distance of approximately about 5 times the screen size. From this and the room size you can calculate the optimum TV size for your room.
    4. Nowadays people want to screen something good from their smart phones also. Nowadays as online platforms screen more things, people will like to use their TVs with internet and have access to social media Youtube, Online movie platforms like Netflix etc. They may also like to project from their smart phones too. Photo sliding features Skype etc also may be needed. Hence today's TV s should have smart features i.e you should buy a Smart TV with such facilities.
    5. Though above all are some parameters affordability and durability, warranty and service are also to be considered to make a final decision.

  • TV is one of the gadgets in our lives that has gone through so many innovations and developments and today we are talking of ultra HD or 4K resolution internet compatible TVs having bigger screen sizes and unbelievable resolutions and clarity of pictures. The detailed answers to the queries raised in this question are as follows -

    i) Television technologies have gone through a big change from CRT time to the present day internet TV. Many technologies were introduced like LCD, LED, OLED in the screen side and Android OS and internet TV in the internet connectivity side. HD (high density) resolutions and UHD (ultra HD) followed soon. Today's TV technology gives an experience of home theatre coupled with internet access.

ii) Screen is the main part of the TV as we see the performance and resolution of TV on it only. There are many new technologies that were introduced in the screen manufacturing and some of them are commonly known as LCD, LED, QLED, and OLED. After the obsolescence of CRT tubes, LCD (liquid crystal display) took the market by a storm and became much popular. These were affordable but less energy efficient. Then LED (light emitting diode) screen came in market which were much efficient and robust. LED is the most popular TV screen even as on today. QLED (Quantum dot LED) and OLED (Organic LED) are relatively newer technologies which give better performance but are expansive.

iii) Screen resolutions vary widely from 1280 x 720 pixels to 3840 x 2160 pixels. The latest is 4K technology in which it is still higher at 4096 x 2160. For a smaller size screen the lower resolutions are sufficient to give a good picture quality but for larger screens one has to go for the higher resolution.

iv) When one goes to buy a TV the main features to be seen vis-a-vis ones requirement are screen technology used, screen size, resolution, recording and playback facility, internet compatibility etc.

    Knowledge is power.

  • The latest technology is 4k technology. in this, the screen resolution is more than 4096 X 2160. People are preferring this with big screens.

Coming to the screen technology once LCD or Plasma are thought to be the best. But now Plasma has lost its way. Now even LCD/LED are going away and Organic Light Emitting Diode display technology (OLED) is gaining importance. In OLED each pixel provides its own illumination whereas in other forms LCD TV are illuminated by an LED backlight for all pixels.

The next point we may think of is the screen size. We should go for the size based on the size of the room. There are calculators which give you which size is better for your room. Again this distance will vary based on the technology of TV. For 4K you need not go for a very long distance. Anyhow you can decide based on the room size, model and technology.

Now people are also seeing for Smart TV. This TV comes preloaded with an operating system (OS) – Android, Google TV, Tizen, etc. – that functions similar to a smartphone OS. You can connect to the internet to view content, install additional apps and even games.

Other points you can consider are:
    1.The number of HDMI Ports
    2. Optical or SPDIF/coaxial audio out port
3.TV with built-in- wi-fi or supports external wi-fi USB dongles.
    .
    Some tips and best practices:

Keep the TV in turn off mode when no one is seeing the programme on it.
The higher star rating will be more energy efficient./
Smaller screens consume less electricity than larger screens
Electricity consumption will be more for brighter TVs.
Never leave TVs in standby mode for a long time.
Don't clean the TY with a wet cloth. Don't clean the TV when it is ON.

  • There are many new models of TVs that are being introduced in the market time to time and the customer is at his wits end to select one from that big range. It is true that so many new technologies have been introduced like OLED etc but they are expansive also and I would not suggest to go for them blindly. Let them be established in the market and by that time hopefully prices would also come down and then only it is better to venture to buy those high end items. Presently I would suggest to go for the proven LED technology including internet facility in which there are various screen sizes available and one can choose out of that depending on the room size and viewing distance. It is also to be seen that a big screen in a small room would not be a good proposition as you would not get the desired distance to sit to really enjoy its resolution. One thing which is also important is the recording and playback facility so that one can see the program of one's choice leisurely.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

  • During our earlier days in the year up to 1985, there a few brands of coloured TV of direct view types produced by Sanyo, Onida, Konark etc apart from the Black and White versions and since then, there has been a tremendous change in their variants and qualities.
As asked by the author, I have enlisted my explanations in relation to his queries -
    1) We started our journey from Direct View type in terms of TV production during 1985 - 90 regime but the variants showed a lot of improvements with the progress of time. Later, Plasma Display Panels appeared in the market. In the year 2010, the old version was replaced by LCD also known as Liquid Crystal Display. Such a segment was quite popular among TV viewers but after sometimes some blurring effects could be seen in its green colour and then LED version of TV appeared known as Light Emitting Diodes. Now we have two versions of LED, such as Organic Light Emitting Diode( OLED) and the latest version being Quantum Light - emitting Diode.
    2) Screen type had developed all the times but the latest technology has the significant impact on the picture quality.
LCD TV used the Flat Screen where as LED TV Screen uses thousands of tiny LED behind the screen for its lighting up producing brighter image.
OLED is one of the newest high technology variant available in the market. It has got the special feature of restricting the light to spread to unwanted areas on the screen. This has the provision of the curved screen providing exciting viewing experience.
    3) Resolution would refer to number of pixels vertically and horizontally for the video display.
The higher the number of pixels, the better is the resolution. They are as follows -
    1) 720 ( HD )
    2) 1080 ( Full HD )
    3) 2160 ( 4 K)
    4) 4320 ( 8 K )
    4) Features-
    1) Smart TVs are used with multiple type of TV display technologies. Now the present trend is to produce only smart TV.
    2) High Dynamic Range refers to the contrasts between the brightest white and the darkest blades.
The theory lies in adopting the technology that higher the dynamic range, the closer the photograph indicating the real image.
    3) Voice - activation -
More and More TVs are attached with some technology like Google Assistant directing the TV to give some instructions like - play channel 303 or go to ESPN etc.
    5) Samsung, LG, Sony have best variants suiting to you in terms of picture- quality, sound apart from their affordable price - range. You may have one from such brands.
