Can I do intermediate again for my D. pharma

Planning to study D.Pharma for a better future? Searching for detailed information regarding pre requisite and eligibility for D.Pharma? Find advice from ISC epxerts for your query here.

I have done my Intermediate iwth commerce course in 2017. Now I am studying B.Com final year and working in a private hospital pharmacy on a part time basis. The doctors have suggested to study D. Pharma for a better future.
I have come to know that I am not eligible for the D.Pharma course because of Intermediate commerce course.
Can I repeat Intermediate Science again?

  • Commerce stream intermediate students are not eligible to join D. Pharmacy.
The eligibility criteria for this course is a pass in 10 + 2 or equivalent examination with Sciences. The admissions will be based on the written conducted by the institute and based on the rank, the seats will be allotted.
So you have to study again Intermediate with science subjects. You can do this through the distance mode of education. The open university will be offering this course or other distance education schools may also be offering this course. Even you can join in intermediate again as a student and attend the college also. This will take two years and 2 years diploma. So the total time for you to complete your Diploma will be 2 + 2 = 4 Years.

  • Yes, you have to repeat the intermediate course with the science stream taking Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as one of your options and the other option could be Physics, Chemistry and Bilogy. There are some aspirants persuing 10+2 with the combination of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology simultaneously from a recognised Board so as to be eligible for D. Pharm course.
Repeating the same by being a regular student of a school would affect your current assignments being persued and hence it would be a wise step to undertake this course from IGNOU or from any other distance education mode. However, ensure that such a distance education mode is the recognised one in terms of its affiliation.
In order to take admission in D. Pharm, you will have to pass the entrance test conducted by such institutions and your age should not be less than 17 years. The entire course duration is of two years divided in four semesters. Some of the best institutions are BITS Pilani, Punjab university etc.
Switching over to D.Pharm course would take its own time at least there will be an extension of additional two years for acquiring the diploma where as your B.Com degree would open plethora of options such as taking up probationary officers examination of the Banks, LIC PO, taking up MBA from a reputed institute or even you can persue M. Com for your better prospects in teaching line. Analyse pros and cons prior to switching over your track.

  • There are two ways to address this problem. First is to do intermediate or higher secondary again but with science stream this time and for that you have to apply for admission in class XI as per the procedure adopted in the board of education and college where you are planning to go for it. This option would require 2 years and once you pass class XII with science stream then you become eligible for applying for D.Pharm. Many students do not like to do this in regular mode due to various social and personal reasons and for them the second option is a better one and that is to go for correspondence mode for Intermediate course in Science stream. You can enquire in your area for the correspondence institutions which can help the students in getting their intermediate science qualifications.

    Knowledge is power.

  • It is possible to again go for Intermediate exam but only thing is two precious years of your prime time would go towards it. If you have no issue for that loss of time then you can very well apply for admission in the college of your choice or available to you for doing Intermediate with Science subjects this time. After that you have to apply for admission for D. Pharma. While submitting your educational credentials, you would have to submit all of them to justify your 4 years taken in the Intermediate itself. I have personally known some cases where the students having done their intermediate with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths have again taken admission in Intermediate for only one subject that is Biology and after completing that applied for entrance test for doing MBBS. In your case it is different as you have to take all the science subjects needed to make you qualify for appearing for D. Pharma. You have an option of going for online mode of doing Intermediate Science course also and in the present pandemic situation that only seems a feasible option for you.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

  • Since you don't have a Science background in the twelfth section, you need to enrol again for a course which is having science as a base subject. Now you have done B.Com with commerce background and it will take more than 4 years to complete the course. Since you have B.Com degree you could have done the course in commerce background then you will have more career profile.
You need to complete plus two or examination which is equivalent with physics, biology, chemistry or maths as a base subject and then you will be eligible for Diploma in Pharmacy and also you will get Bachelors degree in B.Pharm.
