  • Career switch from B.Tech to Psychology

Are you interested in making a career switch from engineering to psychology? Searching for whether it is possible and how to go about it? Find advice from our experts on this page and plan how to move ahead.

I am a B.tech graduate in CSE, but I want to switch into psychology for my master's degree. Is this possible? What I want to know is, is it possible to get into MA/Msc Psychology, without a bachelors graduation in psychology?
If this switch is possible then would I be restricted to just Industrial/Organisational psychology or the other psychology courses (for example School Psychology or Counselling Psychology) are open to me?
Also if this switch is possible then what is the procedure for admission to Ma/Msc Psychology in West Bengal? Which Colleges/Universities do not require the bachelors degree necessarily to be in psychology for a masters in the field? Is there an entrance exam for this or its based on graduation merit score?
I would be extremely grateful if you could provide me any information regarding this matter.

  • Yes. You can do an MA or MSc in Psychology without having graduation in Psychology. The eligibility criteria will vary from university to university. MA Psychology is offered by many top universities for graduates with 50% marks in their graduation. So if you got more than 50% in your B.Tech you can apply for that.
Admission to the course in some colleges based on the marks they obtained in the degree and some colleges based on the rank obtained in the entrance test. Some colleges will conduct oral test also in addition to the written test. Almost all major universities are having this course and you can go through the website of the university and decide.
There are some universities which are offering distance mode or private mode also. IGNOU is one such university.
Once you get admitted into this course you can opt for any specialisation you like. There is no restriction as such.
The following are some of the institutions offering this
    1. Hindu College, New Delhi.
    2.Ferguson College, Pune
    3. St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.
    4. Symbiosis college, Pune
    5. Mithibai College, Mumbai.
