  • NRI Quota to study BA/BSc Economics in top colleges in India


    Searching information for admission under CIWG/ NRI quota in India for students studying abroad? Get the opinion of education experts from this page.

    My daughter is studying grade 12 outside India in CBSC syllabus in Oman. She would like to study BA Economics in India in one of the best Universities. Can you please provide some suggestions? We are looking for either admission by CIWG/ NRI quota. Also would like to know about admission process.
    Also, does she need to sit for SAT Exam?

  • Your daughter will be eligible to apply under NRI quota the following is to be fulfilled.
    1. One of the parents of the student should be an NRI and should be residing abroad as an NRI.
    2. The person who sponsors the student should be a first-degree relation and should be residing abroad as an NRI.
    If the above criteria are fulfilled your daughter's application will be considered. The procedure will be generally on a merit basis. But people who studied in languages other than English should get qualified in TOEFL/ IELTS.

  • Your daughter will be considered for admission against NRI quota if she fulfils the following conditions -
    1) Her either of parents is NRI and is residing abroad.
    2) She must be sponsored by a first degree relation enjoying the status of NRI and is living abroad.
    3) She has cleared TOEFLor IELTS if her medium of instruction was other than English. She will be picked up from the merit list basis and her performance in the qualifying examination would be a determinant factor.

    1. Either mother or father belongs to NRI category and residing in abroad.
    2. Candidate should have cleared TOEFL or IELTS if his/ her medium was other than English. The result would be decided on the basis of the qualifying exam.
    3. Candidate should be sponsored by a first-degree relation and belonging to the NRI category residing in abroad.

  • Govt of India has provided scope for Indians or India origin people in outside countries and in many universities and colleges there are some quota fixed for them. There are various categories of people outside like NRI Ward / Children of Gulf NRI / Foreign National / PIO quota etc.

    Your case falls in the CIWG category which means 'Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries'. CIWG is a facility or scheme by India for the children of Indian expatriates in Gulf countries looking for admissions in Indian Institutes. The admission process works under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA), Scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. Generally fee for these categories is on higher side.

    There are many good colleges/universities for BA Economics in India and you have to select one out of that and then apply against CIWG quota. Some good colleges are -

    First thing required is to register on DTE website for admission and get a unique ID. Once this is done then you have to approach the particular college or university in India and apply there for BA Economics seat against CIWG quota under the DASA scheme of Govt of India. You would be required to submit class X and class XII Mark sheet and certificate, School leaving certificate, Nationality/Citizenship certificate, Passport copy, Equivalence Certificate from Association of Indian Universities, Delhi (address: AIU house, 16 Comrade Indrajit Gupta Marg, New Delhi-2).

    Clearing TOEFL or IELTS test is required and also SAT score is required.
