Mtech structural engineering syllabus in NET

National Eligibility Test (NET) is required for Science and Humanities students for research and teaching positions. It is conducted by National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC). lectureship eligibility and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) eligibility will be decided based on the result.
As a lot of interdisciplinary research is going on these days a few engineering subjects are also covered in the span of science. As on date the test is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science.
An engineering candidate who wants to be a lecturer or wants a fellowship for research can appear for Chemical Science/Earth Science/Life Science/Mathematical Science/Physical Science subjects in the net examination.
If you are not planning for a teaching profession, you need not go for NET and GATE is important for other jobs.

For appearing in UGC - NET examination one should have at least 55% in one's Post Graduation degree (50% for reserved classes). When you go to UGC - NET site you will find that there are two papers in which one has to appear in this examination. Paper-I is common and same for all the candidates but Paper-II is to be selected from the detailed list of subjects as mentioned there. Now UGC has clearly mentioned in its details that if a person does not find ones subject in the list then he can choose a related subject and appear in the examination. So you go through that and being an engineering student, possibly you may like to choose Computer Science & Applications. Please note that as per UGC stipulations if the candidate does not find his core subject in the list of the subjects mentioned for NET entrance exam then he can choose a related subject of his choice.

Please also note that Paper-I itself has many modules and one of them is Information and Communication Technology, which of course you would have to prepare for the examination. So it makes sense to choose Computer Science & Applications for Paper-II. Further, if you go through the list of subjects (so many, about one hundred of them) mentioned for Paper-II, you might find some other subject also interesting which was your favourite during 10+2 and you can even think to choose that also.

There are two more options for you that is CSIR-NET examination or state level SET examination. They have slightly different arrangement of subjects in their syllabus and you can go to the official sites of these agencies and check whether the subjects mentioned there suit to you or not and accordingly you can take a conscious decision to go for that particular entrance examination which ultimately leads to make one eligible for applying for the post of lecturer or Assistant Professor in the state or national level universities.

Please note that the minimum score at your post graduate level should not be less than 55 percent in your case for being eligible for UGC NET examination in your case, since you hail from General Category. A concession to the extent of 5 percent is offered to female candidates, SC, ST and OBC.,
Now talking for the subject Structural Engineering, the same is not included in the syllabus and hence you need to opt for a subject included in the list in which the candidate has to appear apart from a common paper known as paper 1. For the paper2, you will have to see the list and choose a subject of your liking ranging from Humanities to Mathematical Science to Civil Engineering. Your preparation should continued according to your chosen paper.
A final list of eligibility of the candidates would be prepared depending upon your scoring in the test. They follow certain cut off points necessary to secure so as to qualify the test.
Apart from this, you need to clear the viva conducted by the faculty of experts assessing your potential. You will be selected for the post of lecturership as per scoring in both written and viva.
