    Is eating ice bad for teeth and gums?


    Wonder whether chewing ice deteriorates your oral health? Know the answer from our experts.

    My neighbor has an ice addiction since I was 15 and it is getting worse. Is it really bad for his teeth? Does it damage his roots? Because sometimes he says that his gums are aching badly. Besides that, his teeth are not aligned properly. He has gone for therapy but that did not work. Can you please suggest some tips?

  • Anything extreme is not good in the long run. While eating ice, it not only touches the teeth, but other parts and affects throat and mouth walls. As ice has a temperature far less than the average body temperature, it puts a load on the body to maintain the body temperature especially to neutralise the freezing effect on the affected part. The teeth may not feel it immediately, but if there is some problem and it touches the nerves, then it becomes very sensitive.
    If the person is comfortable with eating ice, and does not get cold or sore throat due to that then it means the person can tolerate that. However it is better to do it moderately and avoid it in adverse weather seasons.
    He can take warm water immediately after taking ice. This 'inconvenience' may slowly reduce the addition.

Our metabolism works the best within a certain temperature range starting from 18 degree centigrade to 30 degree centigrade.     a) Taking iron supplements: As the cause for such craving is the iron deficiency, you can ask your neighbour to start taking iron supplements and even include more iron-rich food in his/her diet. After a few days or week, the ice cravings the habit may stop on its own or go away after taking iron supplements.
    b) Replace ice cubes with Slush/soft ice: As ice cubes are hard that can damage your tooth, one can switch to slushies' or shaved or nugget ice as they are softer than the regular ice cubes and would not affect the teeth or gum.
    c) Switch ice cubes with fruit or vegetable crunches: As many are addicted to crunching and may feel the need to bite on ice cubes, you can replace or switch it with some fresh crunchy vegetables like carrot, cucumber or fruits like apple, pear, etc. In this way, they will get the cool crunching to feel and also intake fibrous material that is good for the body.

So, while eating ice enamel becomes expand and contract which leads to crack in the enamel.
