Can I pursue post graduation in geoinformatics after BTech Bioinformatics

Aspiring to study geoinformatics after enginnering in bioinformatics? Want to know if one is eligible to do so? Scroll through this page and get responses from experts for your query.

I am a third-year undergrad student who is still thinking about what to do next. I am very interested in the earth study and would like to pursue further in the same. I am personally interested in geoinformatics, geology, climatology, geographic information science, meteorology, geomorphology and planetary science.
Is it possible that I can pursue post-graduation in any of the above fields?
If not then which field should I pursue in? What are the good colleges for it in and outside India?

  • After completing your B.Tech, you can do a PG course in geoinformatics or in any related subjects. There are some PG Diploma courses also in the related fields. You can select as required do that course. The following are the courses you can think of.
    1. Post Graduate Certificate in Geoinformatics: This course is offered by IGNOU. Graduate in any discipline is eligible to join in this course. The minimum duration of the course for 6 months.
2, Post Graduation Diploma in GeoSciences: The subjects that are being taught in this are Earth Science and Planetary Geology. Data Processing and Analysis for Geosciences, Applied and Tectonic Geomorphology,
Engineering Geology and Ground Water. This course is offered by the Indian Institute of Remote sensing. of ISRO.
    3. Post Graduate Diploma In Geo-Informatics: This course is offered by Shri Vishvakarma Skill University.
    4. Master of Science in Geomatics with Remote Sensing and GIS: This course is offered by Stockholm University.

  • Being a science student you can definitely have ambitions to pursue a PG course in the areas like Geoinformatics, Geology, Climatology, Geographic information science, Meteorology, Geomorphology and Planetary science etc. Only problem that you might face is that in most of the institutions they would ask for a relevant subject which you should had in your graduation. For example doing M.Sc. in Geology would require that a candidate must be having Geology as one of the subjects in graduation. This condition would not be there for all the areas you have mentioned but in some of them such eligibility might be asked.

For M.Sc. Geoinformatics the eligibility is B.Sc. or equivalent in Science subjects with a minimum 55% marks and 1 year experience in the relevant subject. The admission to this course is generally based on interview / counselling after one qualifies in a relevant entrance test, such as SGI Pune Entrance Exam. Some of the reputed colleges for this course are Teri University, Delhi; Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics, Pune; Amity Institute of Geo-Informatics & Remote Sensing, Noida; Suresh Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur; Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environment Education and Research, Pune; Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi; Central University of Karnataka, Karnataka, and Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai.

You have an option for going for PG Diploma in GIS and remote sensing for which eligibility is simply graduation without any condition of relevant subject. This is one good option for making a career in this ever expanding area. Another option is go for M.Sc. in Meteorology for which one has to be Science graduate or equivalent with 50% marks. As regards the Geomorphology courses, these are generally included in M.Sc. Geography course but for that one has to be BA in Geography.

For doing PG in Earth Sciences or Planetary Sciences and other such specialised streams, generally a graduate degree in Geology is the condition of eligibility so that option is not very useful for you.

    Knowledge is power.

  • The course which you are dreaming of persuasion- Geoinformatics is entirely different from Bioinformatics and no where there is any resemblance between the two courses.
Hence for you to have an admission for the said course is nearly impossible.
Let us understand the course content of each of the stream prior to your perusal in such lines. Let me make a brief entry what these subjects are dealing in to make you clear regarding their scopes.
Bioinformatics is the branch of science unfolding an enormous amount of data on health ground. If you are to explore information relating to a particular disease, the attitude of a person or anything linked to genomic structure, Bioinformatics is the best tool to achieve your dream career.
In fact, Bioinformatics teaches you to collect the datas with the application of Biology, Computer Science and Statistics. Even Mathematics plays an important role in understanding the mechanics of this subject. Sometimes Biochemistry has to be applied to solve the the biological problems on molecular and cellular level.
Geoinformatics would enable you to read the computational datas in the area of Mineral Exploration, Environmental services, Mineral Reserves etc. The course concentrates on imbibing in students the fundamentals of Geo Information system related to Civil Engineering branch.
Hence it would not be a prudent idea to switch over your branch and even if you try hard the stringent pattern of selection for both the stream would not land into success.
Take up the post graduation course in Bioinformatics and have a thorough understanding of the statistics with the knowledge and understanding algorithm behind the tool.

  • Eligibility Criteria for pursuing M.Tech in Geoinformatics:
Yes, you are eligible to study M.Tech in Geoinformatics course. The minimum qualification criteria is "B.Tech or B.E in any stream" with minimum 60% marks to be eligible. Qualification required generally varies from college to college but the usual qualification required is as follows. As you are third year B.Tech pursuing candidate, you need to wait for one more year and after 4th year completion you can try to apply for Entrance Examination for pursuing M.Tech. Most of the colleges offer admission into M.Tech in Geoinformatics course on the basis of GATE score (or) some of the colleges conduct their own entrance examinations.

  • Geography also has many branches (Physical Geography, Human Geography, Environmental Geography). There are many fields where you can make your career, such as transportation, environmental science, airline route, shipping route planning, civil services, cartography (map-making), satellite technology, population council, meteorological department, education, disaster management.

    Cartographer
The cartographer must know geography and the environment. Their work is to prepare maps, charts, globes, and models. Cartographers find employment opportunities in news media, book publishing houses, government agencies. You can enter this field by doing a degree or diploma for a cartographer's course. Apart from this, graduates in Geography, Geology, Engineering, Computer Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science can also make a career in it.

    Surveyor
In this form, professionals take a map of the Earth's surface based on mathematical calculations and fieldwork. Get a chance to work in Survey of India, the State Survey Department, or other private institutions.

    Drafter
His work goes along with engineer and architecture, especially in planning, housing, and development projects and in deciding the location and utility of it.

    Urban / Regional Planner
Urban/regional planners develop urban areas by settling on land and developing new colonies. Apart from this, work related to setting up gas plants or other surveys in rural areas is done by these urban/regional planners only.

    GIS and Remote Sensing
Private agencies including local government, major agencies of the country, and other government agencies require GIS specialists. The increasing use of geospatial technology in various industries has improved the chances of employment opportunities in GIS and remote sensing. From missile and unmanned aerial technology to urban governance, e-governance, remote sensing, and even advertising and marketing, every field relies on geo-spatial data.

    Climatologist
There is a lot of demand in this field for those who have deep knowledge of meteorology and climatology. National weather service, news media, weather channel, and other weather-related agencies require climatologists.

    Environmental manager
The environmental manager's job is to influence the environment, make the atmosphere clean, and provide information related to the meteorological department. In the coming time, there is a huge possibility of employment in it.

    Science writer
There should be a good grip on the subject of a science writer. Opportunities exist for writing enthusiasts in newspapers, magazines, and TV channels. Science writers can also work as freelance writers.
