  • According to the legend of Goddess Saraswati appearing in the Rana, after completing the creation of the universe when Brahma saw his creation, he felt that his creation is as calm as a dead body. It has neither voice nor speech. Seeing his indifferent creation, Brahma Ji became frustrated and sad. Brahma Ji went to Lord Vishnu and told about his indifferent creation. Hearing the words of Brahma Ji, Lord Vishnu said that you invoke Goddess Saraswati. Goddess Saraswati can solve your problem.

According to the statement of Lord Vishnu, Brahma invoked Goddess Saraswati Devi. Goddess Saraswati appeared with a veena in her hands. Brahma Ji requested him to fill his creation with her veena. As soon as Goddess Saraswati touched the strings of Veena, the word 'Sa' erupted. This is where the first note of music was born.

The sound of vibrations started coming in the silent creation of Brahma with the vibration of a small voice. The winds, the sea, animals, birds, and other creatures got the voice. The sound of gurgle started bursting from the rivers. Brahma Ji was very happy with this, he addressed Saraswati as the goddess of speech and named Vageshwari. It is also a name for Mata Saraswati. Mother Saraswati is also called Veenapani due to having Veena in her hands.

The literal meaning of the word Saraswati itself is very obvious and it means continuous and consistent flow of knowledge. Basically she is known to have great affect in three main areas of human perusal of arts and learnings and these are speech, music, and knowledge and that is the reason why she is depicted with some objects like that in her perceived picture by the artists.

  • Saraswathi, according to Hinduism, is the Goddess for Wisdom. Goddess Saraswathi is designated God for one's Wisdom, Knowledge, Speech etc., One demon who called Mahishasuran, who did penance towards God to get a boon as no person should be in this world to kill him. No God will give boon as the devotee want but is according to his/her Karma. To destine this demon Saraswathi sent to twist his tongue while asking boon and accordingly he asked the boon by saying that he would not be killed by any person in this world, by skipping women in his list. Accordingly when his ruins and tortures are increased God decided to kill him and decided to send Parasakthi to kill him. When Parasakthi took avatar of Lalithambigai to kill the demon Pandasuran, Sumban, Nisumban and Mahishasuran, she was aided with so many Sakthis to kill Mahishasura.
Saraswathi is the Goddess gave speech to Mookan, a Shepard, who later gave 'Mooka pancha sathi' praising Goddess.
Saraswathi twisted the tongue of Kumbakarna of Ramayan, while doing penance to get boon as 'nithiraithvam' instead of 'nithyathvam'.
Mahakali sent Saraswathi to make a shepard as wise man, in the name of Kalidasa, who gave many poems such as Megasandesam, Kumara sambavam, Raghuvamsan etc.,
In India, in almost all temples, there are shrines of Saraswathi. In Tamil nadu, near Peralam, one village Koothanur has a temple for Saraswathi only. This temple was built by the famous poet, Ottakkooththan, who was in the kingdom of Kulothungan II (1136-1150) by praising Saraswathi.
