  • The term Kumari Kandam was used in the 15th century for the first time.
It was referred in Skanda Purana written in Tamil by Kachiappa Sivacharyara.
The equivalent word for this in Sanskrit is, 'Kumarika Khanda'.
Historians say that Pandiyan Kings ruled Lemuria, a continent for more than 10,000 years. Later this continent got submerged in water. The Lemuria continent is referred to as 'Kumari Kandam'. This place located somewhere in between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This piece of land was connecting Africa with South India through Madagascar. There are some references in the Tamil and Sanskrit literature which confirm the existence of this place centuries ago. Recently ocean exploration work in the Indian Ocean. The work was carried out towards the south of Kanyakumari district. These studies strengthen the belief that this piece of land was existing.
Because of the submerge of this place, Poompuhar, the capital of Pandiyan kingdom and six of the seven temples of Mahabalipuram are remained totally submerged underwater even today also. It is believed by many history pandits that this place got submerged in the ocean due to some Tsunami like catastrophe happened those days. Many theories say that the chances of catastrophes will be more near the equator regions.
As per the Scientists from National Institute of Oceanography, India, the sea level was lower by 60 m about 10,000 years ago than that of the same at present. It was lower by 100 m about 14,500 years ago. The increase in global warming caused an increase in the sea level also between 12,000 and 10,000 years ago. They this might have caused the submerge of these places.
In the Hindu epic, Ramayana there was a mention about a bridge between India and Srilanka and this bridge also might have got submerged during this period. However, some explorations showed the existence of a bridge connecting India and Srilanka.

  • There are some evidences which indicate to such a land mass submerged in the Indian ocean which once might had flourished with kingdoms of that time. A detailed geological and archaeological excavation is required to prove the truth in this story or theory but it had been mentioned in some writings of the Indian scholars at places and has a direct or indirect mention in the history of mankind in the Indian peninsula.

Submerging of land masses or elevation of land masses is a geological process and is not discernible to the naked eye as it is a slow process over the long geological times. We read in basic Geology about these things where it is mentioned that the crust of the Earth is a hard layer practically floating on the softer inside which ultimately sits on a liquid magma. The earth crust can be considered like the hard wax which is seen sometimes sitting over the molten wax inside. The interesting thing about this crust is that it is not in one piece rather it is divided in so many pieces and cracks or joints exist at places in it and during the slow movement of these crusts there is relative motion across these joints or slip planes and at many places the landmass tries to go up pressing down the next piece or submerges beneath it. For example the Gangetic plane in Northern India is a plate in itself and it is pushing against the Himalayas and forcing the Himalayas to uplift and in that process a part of the Gangetic plane which meets the joint between the two submerges beneath the Himalayan ranges. So, such things are happening all across the globe and definitely over a long time interval land masses attributable to different plates can go up or submerge down. Another thing which is happening in parallel is the sea level rise and that also changes with time and is a geological phenomenon. The change in the Earth level at different places in a long run changes the shape of the continents and many places new land emerges out of the oceans while old land is submerged in it. One example often quoted in this context is the temple of Dwarika which is situated on the bank of the Indian ocean in western part of state of Gujarat and divers have found so many submerged temples to the western side inside the ocean which are a proof that land mass there is tilting down in a western direction and submerging in the sea. That is a clear sign of plate movement. In geological language it is known as plate tectonics.

So, Kumai Kandam could be a part of such a process in the past and only the physical excavation can unearth the truth about it.

    Knowledge is power.

  • Those who believe that the Indus Valley civilization begins the history of India, their thinking is now outdated. Such people can deny the evidence of Dwarika Nagari being found within the Gujarat sea. Now they have to muster the strength to deny the existence of 'Kumari Kandam'. 100 or 50 years ago, there were few sources to know the history. History cannot be known now by reading the history books written in that period, although those books are definitely the basis of our knowledge.
Scientists say that the break up of an island called Gondwana led to the formation of India, Australia, and Antarctica. How India was in that period may be the subject of research. But we are talking about 15,000 years ago India. In the 19th century, a section of American and European scholars speculated a submerged continent to explain the geological and other similarities between Africa, India, and Madagascar.
Ever since the Earth was formed, there have been many stages of destruction and many species have gone extinct and new ones. There is a mention of ancient Mahapralaya in all the castes and religions of the world. Not only religion, but geological evidence also shows many ancient catastrophic movements on Earth whether it is in the form of earthquake or volcano or global warming or ice age.
According to historians the name of this island was 'Kumari Kandam'. 'Kumari Kandam' shows the antiquity of a lost Tamil civilization in the Indian Ocean in the south of today's India. It is also known as 'Kumari Nadu'. A section of Tamil researchers and scholars have associated that lost land in the sea with Pandian legends based on Tamil and Sanskrit literature.
According to the authors, modern human civilization was developed not in the continent of Africa but on the island named 'Kumari Kandam' in the Indian Ocean. However, 'Kumari Kandam' or Lumeria is said to be a fictional civilization extinct in the Indian Ocean.
