    Ergonomics design, anthropometry

    A visual display control needs to be placed on a machine. The operator must frequently monitor the controls to collect data, start and stop the machine. The controls will be placed on an articulating arm, however, the arm can not move vertically, only horizontally. The
    visual controls are on a 17 inch computer monitor.

    At what height should the visual control be mounted? What body dimension and percentile were used to determine the height?
    What are the minimum and maximum horizontal distances for the articulating arm?
    What factors need to be considered to determine these distances?

  • For the purposes of ergonomic design, the anthropometric average provides information about construction. For example, this gives data to the chair manufacturer that they can use for more comfortable seating, desk makers can create desks that do not force the employee to fold into an uncomfortable position.

    Factors considered in the design:

    1. Purpose of operation.
    2. Product Design-Value Analysis.
    3. Content-related factors.
    4. Equipment and material location

    All equipment and materials must be located within the common-sense zone and in front of the operator as much as possible. The experiment showed that a semi-circular table with a radius of 20 cm or 50 cm from a point of 4 back or 10 cm back (20 a or 10 cm) gives approximately the centerline of the operator's shoulder and elbow.

    The height of the chair and the workbench should be arranged in such a way so that the worker does not feel any difficulty while working. Their height should be such that the top of the bench remains at the height of the worker's elbow. If possible, the height of the bench should be such that the worker can work in both sitting and standing positions. Chairs should be provided for the footrest.

    Users and machinery should be seen as a combined entity. When a worker operates or uses a machine, tool or tool, it is necessary that the human-machine should be considered as a single working unit from a design point of view.

  • People working for long hours on a laptop or sitting on a chair to do these works on a desktop kept on a table are likely to get a back pain and other disorders in their bodies if the sitting postures are not correct and the height of the chair/table, placement of the articulating arm, and viewing distances are not maintained as required to have a scientifically correct posture. Nowadays, the computer furniture manufacturers are keeping this important aspect in consideration and designing the chairs, tables, and other related items in accordance to that. The chair should have an adjustment for raising it up and down. The backside of the chair should be made in such a fashion that it complements the back curvature lines of a person. This is known as ergonomic designing. Actually ergonomics is the process of designing or arranging workplaces and associated systems so that they fit the people who use them. When we say fit then we mean that it should be comfortable and not harmful for health.

    The studies of these things are done in Anthropometry and there had been many researches in this area which give good ideas and references for ergonomic designs. The anthropometric data has got a big application in the ergonomic designing and making newer more comfortable sitting postures and viewing angles. For designing the workplace for the disabled and the old people more emphasis is to be given on specific ergonomic designs.

    As individuals differ in physical shape so they will require these ergonomic systems in their workplaces after considering their physical characteristics like body size, body shape, mobility etc. So sometimes the designs are user centred also.

    Some of the basic measurements and considerations that matter in ergonomic designs for a desktop environment are -
    1. The base of the screen and centre of the back should be almost at same height from the ground.
    2. While working the head will be slightly bent forward and at that time the angle between the eye to screen line and horizontal would be in the region approximately 28- 35 degree to give the head and neck a comfortable position.
    3. The distance between eye and screen has to be in the range approximately 2 to 2-1/2 feet.
    4. The height of the chair should be adjusted in such a way that there is minimum bending or outstretching of the back.

  • Working on the computer at a stretch for long hours would result in severe strain on the different body parts resulting in headaches, dryness of eyes, eye strain, back aches etc.Ergonomics has the important role to play in alleviating such discomforts. Its main function is to provide comfort to the operator while doing his computer job.
    Furniture would play an important role if it modified considering the different aspects making the operators comfortable in their sitting postures.
    The following considerations would be helpful while making designs for such furnitures -
    1) While glueing over the screen of the computer, the operator becomes over bent so as to have easy availability of the viewing and if the design is made with the compliance of ergonomics design with the adjustment of chairs moving freely upwards and downwards according to the need of the operator, it would not produce strain to the different parts of the body.
    2) The base of the screen and the centre of the back should lie in the same point.
    3) The eye is the important component and to avoid the strain, the distance between eye and the computer should be within the range of 0.75 meter to 1.0 meter.
    4) The chairs made for sitting must provide comports while the operator is engaged for his job on his computer.
    5) Screen glare can also cause strain on the eyes and as such screen filters must be used to dilute the intensity of glaring.
    6) Noise can create nuisance and while choosing the workplace, this aspect has to taken care of with the proper designs of layout. A noise cancelling headset would be very much helpful while doing the computer jobs.
    7) To have better comforts while doing computer jobs, we need to choose right technology with the compliance of ergonomics, right humidity and maintaining the soothing temperature for carrying out the jobs.
