Generally, once you obtain a driving licence it will be valid for 20 years or till the holder attains an age of 50 years, whichever is earlier. The driving licence should be valid and in force when you go on driving a vehicle in a public place. One should get it renewed without forgetting.
Once you have a valid licence you can drive a vehicle of such type for which you have a licence legally. In addition to that, your driving licence will be a document which will be useful to prove your identity. In case of any unwanted incident, you can't claim insurance if the driver of the vehicle is not having a valid licence.
If you want to renew your licence online you can adopt the following procedure. Please remember that you have to attend personally for driving test even for renewal.
Step 1: Go to the official website of the RTO (Regional Transport Office) of Tamil Nadu. https://tnsta.gov.in/ is the site.
Step 2: Then click on the Driving License button
Step 3: Then a new page gets loaded. Click on the Renewal of Driving License option
Step 4: You have to apply for the Smart Card Driving License. You have to pay an additional fee of Rs. 200. Rs,500/- is the renewal fee.
Step 5: You have to scan, upload and submit the required documents
Step 6: The department will verify your application.
Step7: You will be given a slot for a driving test. For that test, you have to attend and perfrom.
Step: Your licence will be issued once you are through the test.
The following are the documents required.
1. Form 9. This form is to be downloaded from the site. Fill, sign and then upload.
2. A copy of the original driving license
3. People who are above 40 years need to produce a medical certificate along with Form 1 A.
4. 2 Passport-sized photographs
5. Copies of self-attested address and age proof documents.
6. Receipt of payment of the application fee
You have to upload all the above documents and submit them.
