  • What BA degree would be most useful after 12?

Do you have query about what to do after BA? Searching for career related advice online? No owrries, our experts shall respond to your query on this Ask Expert page.

Which BA degree would be the most beneficial? A triple major or an honors degree? I haven't been able to decide on one specific subject so I thought I'd opt for a triple major instead but would that degree turn out to be useful in the future? The triple majors I've noticed are mostly in colleges in Bangalore and not in other parts of the country so would that pose a hindrance when I want to do my post graduation later? For instance if I were to get my degree in BA English, Psychology and Journalism, would I be able to get my masters in English?

  • Honours degree would be much more beneficial than the pass - course where you take up three elective papers of your choice included in the curriculum. The combination would vary depending upon your choice and one such combination could be English, Economics and Psychology or any other combination of your liking. The difference between the former and the later is in the former one you will have to go through the six papers of the subject for which Honours has been taken but in the later case, there different subjects each containing three parts containing equal marks are covered.
Hence Honours degree is always more beneficial than the triple majors as indicated by you.
In your case, if you take up English Honours at your graduation stage, your chances of selection for the masters in English would be widened provided your marks are much ahead of the prescribed cut - off marks. If needed, they may conduct a separate interview for your final selection.
However with your selection of triple majors, you may likely to get a seat in your post graduation in English subject to vacancies of seats after inducting the aspirants having acquired the Honours Degree.

  • After class 12 you want to go for BA either in majors or honours for making a career accordingly. The selection of subjects is a crucial matter as it is not the majors only that one has to seek but we must find out the relative merits of those subjects in the present business and academic scenarios so that one can pursue it further for making a career in some related niche area. My advice would be to give preference to one's interest and liking as well as their worth in the job market today.
It will be advisable to do honours in the respective area where one has an interest as well as one can score also nocely. For further higher studies and research pursuits it is only the score which matters in that particular field. Going for three majors is also an ambitious thinking but taking too many majors at the same time will create load on the individual and ask for much more hard work than the usual honours mode. Some institutes are encouraging the students to go for it but I do not think that it is the normal way to pursue a UG course.
Let us now come to some of the areas which are prospective after class 12 from the career point of view and considering them would also be a proper thinking at this juncture of your career. These niche areas are Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), Bachelor of Design in Animation, Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication, Bachelor of Mass Media, Bachelor in Hotel Management and Catering Technology etc.
You can go for the pure subjects in arts, humanities, and social sciences but above mentioned are the skill-based practical fields that might interest you for a better career in the present situation. However, if you have an inclination towards research work and then having aim of seeking lecturer job in the colleges and universities then it makes good sense to go like that as proposed by you.

    Knowledge is power.

  • After class 12th, many students have seen being confused regarding the selection of subjects. As it is considered the turning point of a career. As mentioned above, you want to join BA but now you are in a dilemma either choose honours or triple course. No doubt, honours is better than triple course or pass course. In honours, you have to choose three subjects of your choice from the curriculum whereas, in the triple course, there would be six papers of subject for which honours have been taken.
As far as job prospect is concerned, you need to be careful at the time of selection of subject. As discussed by you, that subject is better for the teaching field and public service commissions job. Nowadays, there are many new subjects available in the career field by taking up your chance of getting a job would be higher. Some of them are as follows:-
    1. BA inJournalism and Mass Communication
    2. BA in education/Physical Education
    3.BA in Environmental Sciences
    4. BA inFine Arts
    5. BA in Hotel Management and Catering Technology
