  • Age Criteria for ICSE and CBSE Boards Admissison

Do you have a concern regarding eligibility criteria for ICSE and CBSE Board? Searching for this information online? Find advice from our experts on this page.

My Daughter dob is: 19-Sep-2017. Currently my daughter is in United States along with me as I am on my official assignment and will return back to India in September-2024. By that time period my daughter will be 7 Years old. We will enroll our daughter in year 2025' session but not sure in which class she will be eligible for CBSE and ICSE board.
Can you please throw some light on this. I will highly thankful to your inputs.
Note- We will return to Delhi-NCR so I believe there will be different age criteria to enroll the child as per state in ICSE and CBSE board.

  • The Department of Education (DoE) has released a circular in 2021 specifying the age criteria for admission to Class 1. According to the notification, the minimum age for admission to Class 1 is 5 years, and the maximum age limit is 6 years as of March 31 of the academic session. This is the same for both CBSE and ICSE.

    Your daughter's DOB is 19th Sept 2017.
So your daughter will be eligible to get admitted to class 1 in the year 2023,
Your daughter will be eligible to get admitted to class 2 in the year 2024.
She will be eligible for admission to class 3 in the year 2025.

As per the existing rules and regulations, you can admit her to class 3 in the year 2025. As of now, these are the norms decided by the boards. We are in 2021 still 4 years to go. There may be some changes in the rules and regulations and the rules that will be in force at that time.

  • There is no different rule regarding age for ICSE and CBSE board. As per department of education's circular 2021, the minimum age should be 5 years for getting admission into class 1 as of March 31st of the academic session. As mentioned above, your daughter's dob is 19th Sept 2017. So, you can get admitted her in class 3 in 2025. It has been suggested according to present rule. As you know rule always keep changing. Now 2021 is going on. After 4 years, whether rule will remain same or not. Nobody can say exactly. If nothing changes happens in department of education then you are eligible for class 3 in 2025.

  • Thank you all for your guidance/suggestion.

I wanted to ask can i enroll my child in Grade-1 in the year 2024' . In 2024' on 31March my daughter will turn 6Years 6Months old. Is it wise decision to enroll the child in Grade-1 at the age of 6Years6Months?

  • According to the latest circular of Department of Education, the age criteria for admission to class 1, the minimum age has been decided as five on 31 st March of the year admission where as the maximum being six on the same date. This is valid for both the pattern of examination such as CBSE and ICSE.
Regarding the date of birth of your daughter, she was born on 19 th September 2017 and hence she will be eligible for her admission to class 1 in the year 2023. By going through the same analogy, she can be admitted in class 3 in the year 2025.
The circulars are subject to changes time to time and the present regulation will remain valid till some modifications are effected by the department of education.
