Is admission into PhD in a private university worthwhile for jobs in future?

Confused about taking admission for PhD in a private university? Want to know the advantages of taking admission in a private university as compared to state or government university? Check out this page for advice from our epxerts.

I am a student from BHU. Recently I was offered admission to PDEU, Gandhinagar. It is a completely private university. Would it be a good idea to go ahead with it? Would there be a problem at the time of the job if PhD done from a private university? Or is it always better to do it from a Central or State university?

  • If the University is having UGC recognition and PhD from that university is also on the list of approved courses, PhD from a private university is also no problem. There are many private universities in India and they are all offering UG, PG and Doctorate courses and they are treated on par with degrees obtained from State or Central universities. In fact, there are very good private universities. Companies are conducting campus interviews and taking the students of that university for jobs.
Pandit Deendayal Energy University ( PDEU), Gandhinagar is a well-known university and earlier it is known as Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU). This is a UGC recognised university. The university is having NAAC accreditation with an 'A' Grade.
PDEU has an excellent track record of securing placement for its students. Many top companies of India are conducting campus interviews every year and hiring students. Many government undertakings also hiring students having degrees from this university. I know some people working in ONGC who are qualified from this university.
https://www.pdpu.ac.in/ is the website of this institute. Just visit that once all your doubts will go. The university is ranking in NIRF is in the band of 101 - 150.
So the PhD from this institute is valid only and you can join. There will not be any problems.

  • It is immaterial that the university is the private one but you have t see the other parader for its judgment at par with the central or state universities. You need to ensure that such a private university fulfils UGC recognition and is equipped with NAAC Accreditation.
You may enquire their course structure of the different courses and you may also verify how many students of that particular university is being absorbed in regular jobs through the campus interviews. This is the testimony of the reputation of such an university running privately.
Pandit Deendayal Energy University, though being a private university has achieved its distinction in terms of offering quality education in the different streams and their students are well placed in the different sectors. Many employers drop in the university campus for hiring students by means of campus interview.
Hence it would be a fine idea to pursue Ph.D course from this university so as to have a bright future either in research institutions or joining a college as a lecturer after completion of the necessary formalities.

  • If phD is done from private university then there would not be problem in getting job. But, before pursuing it, you must check whether university is UGC recognised or not because its approval is compulsory.
As mentioned above that you are planning to do PhD from PDEU( pandit deendayal energy university). It is UGC recognised and NAAC accredited university with A Grade. It is one of the reputed university of Gandhinagar. You would not be problem in getting job after completion PhD from here. This University has good placement record. Most of the student who passed out from this university got good job opportunity in different sector.

  • If the university is the approved one under the UGC guidelines and stipulations then it does not matter much as to from where you are doing a research work but what matters is actually the topic of the research and the quality of the research work which would definitely be a point wherever you go to attend an interview for seeking a job. So, in this case as PDEU, Gandhinagar is already a well known reputed educational institute, you would not have any eligibility for job problem after doing your PhD from it.
For getting a job or securing a position in the industry one must have a very good academic background as well as a good thesis work as applicable in your case. Otherwise it is very difficult to compete with the high scoring students who take lead at the counselling or job interview sessions. But there is another way to deal with it if the past academic career is not very glittering. So, first complete your PhD because it will be a gateway to get the lecturer or Assistant Professor position in the educational institutions and also some good position in the industry as some industries prefer the PhD persons for their R & D work. After completing this, one has to consider applying in various competitive exams like the entrance exams taken by the state and central administrative services, Railway services, PSUs, Banks (preferably for the commerce background people), and many others which open a path for good career lines. So, keep both the things in mind that is getting a job purely on academic merit or trying it through some competitive exam.
So go ahead with your aspirations for research work and all the best.

    Knowledge is power.
